2019 Emmys – Brief Take

I know the Emmy’s have come and gone a long time ago, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t at least give a little recap!

Overall, the fact that there was no host seemed to go a little more seamlessly than the Oscars, and I thought the opening number was excellent! Gotta give love to Bryan Cranston. I also felt like no host lent to more time for the presenters to riff off each other, or have longer and funnier (at times) scripted introductions to the nominees. Some of my favorite presenters included Ken Jeong, Maya Rudolph, Ike Baranholtz, Catherine O’Hara and Adam Devine.

They did nice homages to Game of Thrones and Veep ending – definitely two shows that have dominated the Emmys during their runs. Despite the Emmys usual reward for long-running shows, those two were not big winners of the night. In fact, Veep got shut out altogether by the deserving Fleabag! Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the lead actress Emmy for the past six years, so that was quite a shock for me! Games of Thrones usually sweeps a good number of awards every year it’s nominated, but with such a controversially disappointing last season, only Peter Dinklage really deserved the win, but the show itself picked up the nostalgic win for best drama.

Other random moments and winners that I enjoyed included Jodie Comer’s acceptance speech, Jason Bateman’s reaction to winning for best director, and Chernobyl‘s utter excitement in taking home the Emmy for best limited series. Some surprise winners for me were Billy Porter for Pose, and Julia Garner for Ozark. Not because their performances weren’t great, but based on who they were up against seemed like a bit of a knockout. Either way, I though the entire production was really entertaining, and I love seeing who wins and how the crowd reacts. There’s still plenty of awards shows in the coming months, so if you missed it, stay tuned for others!
