2020 Emmy Awards: Predictions

Awards season is back with the Primetime Emmy Awards this coming Sunday, and even though it won’t look like it normally does, my heart is still so happy that it’s taking place! Lots of great shows are getting love, but I believe there are a small handful that are going to sweep all the categories they show up in. Who knows?! Maybe I will get proven wrong. We shall see. While we wait, below are my predictions of who will win and maybe who should win (if I disagree). Let’s roll!

Outstanding Comedy Series – Sure, it’s the final bow for a couple shows, but I think Schitt’s Creek is the obvious winner in this category. With that being said, you can’t count out the strong second season of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. While I haven’t watched the show, I know the movie was great, so I don’t doubt the critic’s opinions here. Still, the edge goes to the Creek.

Outstanding Drama Series – Again, this seems so obvious that it’s going to be Succession. In fact, this show was so strong that I don’t even think another one would even come close to upsetting this win. Sorry, Better Call Saul.

Outstanding Limited Series – There are some really strong contenders in this category, and I’ve seen most of them! But, despite the fact that I loved Unbelievable and Mrs. America doesn’t mean that I’m unaware of the fact that every person on the planet who watched Watchmen loved it, critics and fans alike. I would be shocked if this didn’t take the trophy home.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series – Honestly, I feel like this category is pretty weak, so I have to give the edge to Eugene Levy of Schitt’s Creek. Perhaps Ted Danson or Ramy Youssef could upset him, but I doubt it.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series – Rachel Brosnahan seems primed for another win here; however, she has to contend with the powerhouse that is Cathrine O’Hara, and O’Hara is just going to win. There’s no other way.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Multiple nominations for a couple shows here, but the edge goes to Succession, with my vote going in Brian Cox’s favor over Jeremy Strong. Although, Strong gave an incredible season finale performance that it could be enough to push him over the edge. Also, no clue why Carell landed a lead actor nod – he was hardly in The Morning Show!

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series – I hear whispers for Olivia Coleman which, based on her recent awards show history, seems like a solid bet, but there is also the camp solidly in Jennifer Aniston’s camp. I personally, even though I have never watched it, heard nothing but praise for Laura Linney this season on Ozark, so I’m picking her as the dark horse win.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – The people love Hugh Jackman and I really liked Bad Education, but Paul Mescal would be such a treat to see win for his portrayal of an emotionally wrecked human being, Connell, in Normal People. I do see people giving Mark Ruffalo the edge, and my love for him makes me okay with that, too.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – So many wonderful choices, but I’d be a fool not to think that Regina King is taking home the win.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series – Equally as weak as the lead slot, I think I’ll pick Kenan Thompsan, because this man deserves some recognition for the time and effort and laughs he’s delivered for seventeen seasons on SNL!

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series – A lot of repeat names here, and based on her track record I think it’d be pretty silly to bet against Alex Borstein at this point. Wouldn’t mind a D’Arcy Carden upset, though.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – This category is so strong that I wish they could all get awards. Three nominations from Succession alone?! I’d take any of them winning, and I’d also be thrilled seeing Billy Crudup or Mark Duplass take home the award, but the edge goes to Kieran Culkin’s man-child, Roman Roy.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Some crazy A-list names are sitting in this category, but I would like to see Julia Garner add to her Golden Globes win for her work on Ozark. Sarah Snook of Succession would also be awesome.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Having not seen it, I cannot really pick one of them, but I would guess a Watchmen actor will take home the trophy. Otherwise, Jim Parsons is a strong contender for his work on Hollywood.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or MovieMrs. America might be dominating the nomination slots in this category, but if Toni Collette doesn’t win I will riot! In fact, I’m already rioting because Merritt Weaver’s name was absent from the nominations! With that being said, I do hold a soft spot in my heart for Jean Smart from back when she did Fargo, so I’ll allow it.

That’s all I’ve got for you all, so stay tuned next Monday when I recap the show! For a full list of the nominees, click here.
