Another new awards ceremony format entered the fold, as the SAG awards were also held at home. In fact, unlike most of the other that have tried a loose hybrid, the SAG awards were basically all from Zoom. No one interacted with anyone really. It was also the weakest attendance from the nominees I have seen thus far. Anyway, more recapping coming your way.
The SAG awards recognize both film and television performances, but at this point in the season, not many of the wins came as a surprise. In the comedy categories you saw Jason Sudeikis, Catherine O’ Hara and Schitt’s Creek take home the wins, and for drama you saw Gillian Anderson, Jason Bateman, and The Crown do the same. I will say that Bateman’s win over Josh O’Connor was a bit of a surprise, and I think he was surprised, too! In the Limited Series categories, Anya Taylor-Joy bested Michaela Cole yet again, and Mark Ruffalo beat out Ethan Hawke again! Weirdly, best limited series is not a category, so I guess we’ll never know what would have won (but it would have been The Queen’s Gambit).
The film acting categories did offer a couple surprises on my end at least, with Minari‘s Youn Yuh-jung taking the trophy home for supporting actress, while Viola Davis nabbed best actress. That is four different people who are all nominated for the Oscar winning that honor, so it’s really hard to predict who will take it on the day! I feel the same is true for the supporting actress category, because while a lot of people liked her performance, she hasn’t swept at the awards show up to this point. Daniel Kaluuya and Chadwick Boseman unsurprisingly took home supporting actor and actor, respectively. I think those two are a lock for the Oscars, but I would still choose Anthony Hopkins as my favorite of the male performers, followed closely by Riz Ahmed. It’s really tough, as there were so many good films this year! Finally, The Trial of the Chicago 7 took home the big prize of the night, but to be honest, that category was too short and didn’t have the best films of the year in it, in my personal opinion.
Oh well! This is just one last step before the Oscars finally air at the end of the month, and I hope that it’s a lot longer and more in person than this event was. Don’t get me wrong, it was cool to try a new format, but the hour long special just flew by! I want a 3 hour awards show! They tried to keep it light and fun by having presenters answer an array of questions, but it’s pre-recorded nature just felt like it was missing some pizzazz. Have I mentioned that the pandemic has ruined everything? Anyway, here is a complete list of winners.
