Adults – Season 1 Review

Both stylistically and topically, Adults felt like a very similar offering to Overcompensating, so I was very intrigued to check it out.

Rather than dealing with college students however, we are treated to the chaotic lives of early twenty-somethings all sharing a house in New York City. I could not be any more different from this group of friends, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a good comedy. And while this wasn’t the best comedy I checked out in 2025, I still found it to be an enjoyable watch.

We have Samir and Billie who have been friends since they were little. While Samir wanders a little aimlessly through life, Billie seems to be more straight-laced than the rest of the houses’ inhabitants. She’s trying to loosen up a little bit and try new things as the season goes along, but her dating a former teacher who calls her his “rock bottom” as he’s tripping on ketamine is too funny. She’s trying her best. Even without health insurance.

Issa and Anton are friends that Samir made in college. Anton is a social butterfly, almost to his detriment sometimes (or murder), while Issa is as wild as they come. She seems like the “dumbest” in the group, though I really think she just lives her life with a lot of whimsy. Of all of the characters in the show, she makes me the most uncomfortable, though I love her Canadian boyfriend, and new housemate, Paul Baker. While initially denied housing strictly due to lack of space, he’s soon welcomed with open arms by the rest of the housemates.

He fits seamlessly into their wild antics, relating to them, but kind of on a more normal level. Their biggest challenge comes at the end of the season when they learn that Paul Baker’s visa is expiring. In an effort to keep him from getting deported, they plan to have Issa marry him, but Anton ends up doing so instead. The feelings swirling in this house are complicated, and I imagine we will see more of that unfold, good or bad, in a second season.

While I don’t see a long future for this show, I know I’ll have fun watching it for however long it lasts.
