Album Review: Declan McKenna – Zeroes

I’m so mad at myself for waiting almost a whole week to listen to Declan McKenna’s new album, Zeroes. It’s been three years since his debut release, and then this record has had its release date pushed way too many times. Although, I suppose it was ultimately worth the wait because it was a spectacular listen!

Seriously, I was expecting to dislike at least one song, but each track just kept proving me wrong! I mean, right out the gate with “You Better Believe!!!” is such a strong and catchy opening that just grabs your attention from the go. Each song that followed kept the tempo up for the most part, and was infused with a modern disco vibe, which I love! Then finally you think he’s going to slow it down with the closing track “Eventually, Darling.” But it ends just as strong as the album starts, with swelling instrumentals backing McKenna’s vocals.

Other standout songs on the album for me were “Emily” and “Beautiful Faces,” but you really couldn’t go wrong on shuffle with this album it’s that impressive. Even more impressive is the age of this guy! He’s only 21! Incredible talent. It makes me think back to how his very first song, “Brazil,” which was criticizing FIFA and their awarding of the World Cup to Brazil, was created when he was 15! That’s some pretty mature political thought for a teenager, but he is clearly more evolved than most.

I highly encourage you to check out Declan McKenna’s entire musical catalog, because I promise you will not be disappointed. He’s got jams for days, and it’s a great way to ease you out of summer.
