Just like the People’s Choice Awards, the American Music Awards really aren’t that much better. They are both voted on by the fans, but the nominees are obvious and repetitive among so many categories. Despite me not being a huge fan of top 40 music, I was pretty entertained by the musical performances, and there were a ton of them!
My favorite performance of the night probably had to go to the only rock that made it onto the show, which was Post Malone with Ozzy Osbourne performing “Take What You Want.” The worst, hands down, goes to Selena Gomez. Already a weak singer on her own, opening the show was a poor decision on the organizer’s part. I’m not a big Camila Cabello fan, so seeing her perform three separate times was a bit too much for me. And although I’m not a Taylor Swift junkie, I could appreciate her medley of hits she sang before accepting the award for Artist of the Decade.
One of the most fun and nostalgic performances of the night belonged to Shania Twain! This is probably the only country artist I’ve ever listened to and know the words to multiple songs, so this was a nice throwback for me. Kesha also got up onstage to sing her newest song, while also breaking out the hit that launched her career. Overall, it was a night about the music, and seemingly the awards second, although there wasn’t too much love going around. No love for Lizzo was an incredible surprise, especially since I dislike Billie Eilish so much (not bitter, I swear).
Either way, this awards show was a little easier for me to swallow than the People’s Choice, so I can’t complain too much. Click here for a complete list of winners.
