Whew! What an exhilarating 24 hours! Two awards shows announced their 2020 nominees, and there were quite a few pleasant and unpleasant surprises.
Let’s start with the Golden Globes’ general disappointments. The fact that there were no women nominated in the directing category was a bit of a shock. I thought we’d for sure see one for Greta Gerwig in the feature film slot, and Ava DuVerney for television. There was also a significant lack of nominees of color. Having not seen a decent portion of the contending films, I can’t really say that Jamie Foxx or Cynthia Ervio deserved nods, but they’re definitely big names that people noticed were missing. Also, the Emmy darling When They See Us was straight up ignored! Having never seen the show, I was still surprised to see this winner completely ignored, especially in place of the likes of The Morning Show.
Here are my observations:
1. No love for Uncut Gems, The Peanut Butter Falcon, or Honey Boy?!
2. I feel like either Willem Dafoe or Robert Pattinson should have been acknowledged for their wacky turns in The Lighthouse, but nada.
3. I’m on board with that Greta Gerwig snub – WTH???
4. No Veep? Why so much of The Morning Show?? Did anyone even watch Catch-22???
5. While Antonio Banderas totally deserved his nod, on the opposite end, Cate Blanchett did not (Where’d You Go, Bernadette? was truly terrible).
6. As an avid watcher/lover of Mr. Robot, I would love to see Rami Malek take the statue home for his last turn as the character that launched his career.
The Critics’ Choice award nominees also got announced, and while a lot was the same as the Globes’, they have more nominees per category, so therefore, more love to go around. Specifically to Uncut Gems and Schitt’s Creek – yay! But even with more love there were still some snubs that shocked me – like Richard Jewell! I’d say I was more pleased with the Critics’ choices, but still being in the dark about most of these films, I suppose I can’t say for sure.
