Awards Season: Critic’s Choice

Last night, on the eve of Oscar nominations (more on that in another post), the Critic’s Choice Awards took place. While slightly less star-studded than the Globes last week, there were still some of your favorite A-listers from this year’s biggest and best television series and movies. Let’s review!

Admittedly, I guessed most of these winners incorrectly, but to my defense, each category had so many nominees who all gave stellar performances! Some carry-over wins from last week were Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt in all the major motion picture acting categories. I would still like to see someone other than Phoenix win for best actor, because legitimately all of them were so good (especially the Adams)!

Unsurprisingly, Succession and Fleabag took home a majority of the awards in the television drama and comedy categories, respectively. I did like the new show idea that Kieran Culkin shared with Andrew Scott last week: combine Succession and Fleabag to make “Suc-Bag.” I would totally watch that. Sadly, Schitt’s Creek walked away empty-handed, and so did critic’s favorite, Zendaya. Watchman was successful in grabbing two acting category wins for Regina King and Jean Smart – way to go! I also sort of laugh now at cast members from This is Us getting nominated alongside such strong shows (I mean how can you compare Watchman to This is Us, seriously?).

Once again, The Irishman gets shut out and Marriage Story just falls flat. I can’t stand that Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood keeps getting so much love, because so many other films are more deserving of it! That film took home Best Picture over the likes of far more superior films like Uncut Gems and 1917. I just feel ominous going into the Oscars, and I hope the SAG awards can calm me down next weekend.
