Book Review: Case File Compendium – Vol. 6 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou

The fact that I didn’t finish the sixth volume of Case File Compendium before I left for a two week vacation almost feels like a crime. But that doesn’t take away from just how freaking good the latest installment of Rou Bao Bu Chi Ru’s novel was.

Now perhaps this just makes me simple minded, but the first half of the novel was just He Yu and Xie Qingcheng making love to each other. I know for sure He Yu’s actions are based on love. But ever since he confessed his feelings to Xie Qingcheng in the last novel, and also proved those feelings, Xie Qingcheng is maybe starting to feel the same way. I think it’s difficult for him because he has never truly felt anything like romantic love before, and of course with his conservative world view, he finds it even more difficult to reconcile what’s going on in his heart.

Even though Xie Qingcheng is starting to feel a certain way towards He Yu, he is also well aware of the fact that his death is approaching more quickly than he initially thought. In order to restore and further his mentor’s research, he has started back up his use of RN13 to reinstate his power. Doing so though is rapidly increasing his body’s deterioration. He estimates he’s maybe got six more good years left, and instead of tormenting He Yu at that time, he decides it’s best to cut the chord now. As most people can probably attest, sure, the loss in the long run will be devestating, but people who truly love you would cherish any minutes they get to spend with you. No matter how few.

Breaking up with He Yu proves to be harder than Xie Qingcheng thought, though he holds fast in his decision. But I admire He Yu’s determination to not let things end like this. It’s a shame he doesn’t know the true reason, though I’m sure he will find out soon enough. Speaking of finding things out…He Yu’s mother had hired a private investigator to see who He Yu’s been pursuing, so of course she almost exploded in fury when she found out. But in order to try and have He Yu keep her in his good graces, she devised a plan that would ruin both Xie Qingcheng and his sister’s reputations.

Xie Xue learns she is pregnant after she is set to be married, and even though Xie Qingcheng doesn’t particularly like the guy, I think his time with He Yu softened him enough to let Xie Xue do as she pleases. He Yu’s mother’s plan was to drug the room where Xie Qingcheng and the groom were to have a final conversation prior to the wedding, but He Yu, ever diligent, sensed something was off and went into the room instead. The pair were found out mid tryst much to his mother’s dismay, but all of that still didn’t sway Xie Qingcheng from his earlier decision to end things with He Yu. Oh, and through all of this things finally ended with Chen Man’s one-sided infatuation, too. Thank goodness.

The novel left off with a death in He Yu’s home. I assume it’s his father, but sadly I will have to wait and see what unfolds until January! I want to read all of this story so much, but at the same time I know I will be super bummed when it does finally end. Here’s hoping I can find something else that lives up to this story’s quality!
