Cobra Kai Season 2 Review

I stretched the second season of Cobra Kai out a little bit compared to the first, but it was no less exciting or awesome! The second season essentially picks up right were the first season left off, with Kresse showing up at Johnny’s Cobra Kai dojo and Sam joining Miyagi-Do. Where this season ends is really crazy, so I’m glad I don’t have much of a wait for the third season to premiere on Netflix!

Obviously, Johnny approaches John Kresse’s arrival with extreme skepticism, and at first rejection (rightfully so!). After a short time though, Kreese is showing Johnny that he’s changed his colors and understands that the dojo is his now. For a few episodes they do teach harmoniously, but is anyone really that surprised that Kresse turns it all around and gets the kids to follow his lead and his “no mercy” creed? Not really, but the journey there was fun. What really sucks is that Kreese made his move when Johnny was reuniting with his friends, one of whom is dying of cancer!

Meanwhile at Miyagi-Do, it’s just Robby and Sam trying to master Mr. Miyagi’s techniques. It’s clear there is a spark between the two, but they’ve got to be a little careful since Robby is now living with the Russo’s. A little down the line, Demetri joins the dojo, but he literally complains about everything! I understand he serves as a counterpoint to Hawk, but give this guy less lines next season please! Not all is good and well for Daniel though, because all the time he is spending with his students is less time away from his real job at the dealership and his wife. This causes some points of contention, and I am sure it will continue to be in the third season.

It wouldn’t be Cobra Kai if there weren’t opportunities for the warring dojos to compete against each other now would it? There were a handful of fights throughout the season, lots of glaring, and stealing thunder at a talent show, but the real conflict comes in the form of a massive school fight in the season finale. All throughout the season we see that even though Sam is with Robby and Miguel is with new Cobra Kai recruit Tori, the former couple still think about each other often. Tory spots Sam kiss Miguel at a party and basically wants to end her life. This is the start of the fight, and pretty soon the boys and the rest of the warring dojos come to blows throughout the school. It all goes awry though when Robby kicks Miguel over the railing of a balcony. His back cracks down square on a railing and he is seriously injured.

Distraught by Miguel’s accident, Johnny gets dumped by Miguel’s mother and then learns that Kreese has stolen the dojo right out from under him. But based on all the violent carnage that’s taken place over the course of the season, Johnny’s done with Cobra Kai anyways. Daniel, too, gets Miyagi-Do taken away from him by his wife, since its teachings is what landed Sam in the hospital, as well. The cliffhanger at this point is whether or not Miguel will live or not, and Robby is on the run.

I can’t wait for next season! The trailer already sort of debunked the cliffhanger, because Miguel is alive. He certainly not in fighting shape though, and it looks like Johnny will take it upon himself to make sure he’s better. It also looks like Robby goes to prison?? Or juvie, at least. I’m sure that despite Amanda’s demands that Daniel shuts down Miyagi-Do that he’s not going to. Especially when he learns that Kreese has taken the reins. The trailer also strongly hinted at a team-up between Johnny and Daniel to probably take Kreese down and I am here for it! Anyways, very excited to report back in January with what the third season brings!
