Concert Review: Here Come the Mummies

Truthfully, seeing Here Come the Mummies again at the House of Blues near me was one of the concerts I was really looking forward to last year until COVID put life and live music on hold. Sure, their Halloween livestream was awesome, but I really wanted to be in the room with the band and feed off of their insane energy. Well, I just got that chance last night!

Back to make up for last year’s missed show, the secretive funk band took the stage and rocked hard for just under two hours. Seriously, they never stopped once to gab at the crowd. It would have ruined the upbeat party energy that they brought with the very first song. They opened with “My Party,” which got the whole crowd amped and immediately dancing, then they followed that up with “Ra Ra Ra” which is ripe for audience participation (and believe me, they participated). There wasn’t a slow song in the setlist and that kept a huge smile on my face.

Two really creative turns they took last night included a beatboxing flute duet and then quadruple the saxaphones with only two mummies playing them! Color me impressed! As someone who was in band a long time ago, it’s cool to see so many brass instruments used in a cool and fun way. It almost makes me wish I never gave it up back then. A lot of these musicians were multi-instrumentalists, too! In fact, I saw one mummy not only sing, but play the baritone sax, tambourine, drums, keytar, and the flute! That’ some crazy talent right there! Aside from there being an abundance of instruments on stage, there was also a nice mix of singers sharing the microphone. Four to be exact! That added a nice amount of variety to the evening.

Of course, some of my favorite songs of theirs were played, such as “Kinda Lingers,” “Freak Flag,” and “Attack of the Weiner Man.” Just ask my sister, I’ve been singing these all day. What I love most about this band is that their anonymity keeps the performance fun and you get the chance to really focus on the songs rather than who’s singing them. Also, I love how inappropriate every tune is. To all you heavy metal and rock fans out there, if you like Steel Panther, I implore you to listen to their funk counterparts. How fun would a potential co-headlining tour like that be?! Some of their song titles are a little more obvious than others, such as “She Likes Dick” or “Threeway on the Freeway,” but I promise you might blush at least once while listening to their set.

I do believe this might be my last concert in person for 2021, but it was a great way to end the concert season. I left the venue with a smile on my face and knowing that I just had a blast. Perhaps another surprising and cool thing about that show was the very eclectic crowd. All ages were at that show and all of them were so excited to be there, both dancing along and belting out the lyrics to each and every song. That is a communal experience, and that’s why I’m so happy live music was able to take place again this year. Whenever you get the chance, definitely go check out this fun band, Here Come the Mummies.
