Okay, now I am almost certain that Here Come the Mummies tour annually, so I can expect to see them in my nearest city every year. And that makes me so, so happy.
I stand by it though. Here Come the Mummies are maybe one of the biggest anomalies in my music likes. Aside from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, kind of, I’m not into funk. And I can explain why a little bit here. Although I don’t recall there ever being any openers to a Mummies’ show, this time there was. A run of the mill rock band (but very good), Platinum Moon, and then a three person funk act called Lachy Doley. I have no clue if the latter is a person’s name, but it was an Australian dude leading the thing, so one would assume.
Anyway, Lachy Doley was also a funk musician that night. Only he was tooled with a keyboard and a keyboard’s version of a wah wah pedal. Which I had never seen before, so in that respect it was neat. However, his set was one of the long thirty minutes of my life. Nothing about what he did sounded bad, but it was just so much of the same, long, drawn-out jam session music that my phone ended up saving me from falling asleep on my feet. The rest of the audience seemed to really enjoy him, but it was just not at all for me. And that’s what I mean when I say Here Come the Mummies are an anomaly. In a genre that’s dominated by songs that never end, the Mummies keep it brisk, fresh, fun, and ultimately funny.
The show opened, as I believe it always does with a “freak” double-whammy. We get “My Party” and “Freak Flag” both talking about being yourself, even if you’re a little kinky. I was thrilled to see a random audience member holding up a flag with “FREAK” written on it. My persona favorite, “Kinds Lingers” made it early on the set list, but I think their whole catalog is so strong that it was hard to be disappointed with where that one landed. A couple of my other favorites, ‘Threeway on the Freeway” and “Ra Ra Ra” got the crowd revved up. Nothing beats hearing the first few chords of “Attack of the Weiner Man” and hearing a middle aged man shout with so much joy at it being played. I cackled.
This time around we even got a new song! It was called “Road Trip” and it might be the least sexually suggestive song they have. Still, it was just as catchy as the rest and really cool to hear it for the first time! Heck, they said it hadn’t even made it to “the internet” yet. Truthfully, I have no clue how often this rag-tag group of musicians releases new material, so I have no clue if this was a monumental moment for them or not. They looked like they were having a blast with it just like all of the other ones, so it’s hard to tell.
I sincerely hope they never stop touring, because now I have a shirt to wear to the shows! It’s good to be a freak among freaks.
