Concert Review: twenty one pilots

Though it is at least the sixth time I’ve seen Ohio natives, twenty one pilots, live, doesn’t make the show any less amazing.

In fact, I was very happy to be able to go see them on this tour. Being from here means it’s almost a guarantee that they are going to play nearby, but the ticket prices this time around were kind of wild. Even though Clancy is a superior album, I wasn’t itching to pay so much for even nosebleed seats. So I held out. And miraculously a few hours before the show someone was practically giving away a seat in the lower bowl, so I snatched it right up! Even more to my delight was seeing how close the seat was to both the floor and the B-stage! I was maybe two car-lengths away. Incredible!

I was lucky enough to snag a ride with my friends, and I wasn’t sad that we got there late enough to meet the one opening act I’d never heard of. After just a short twenty minutes, the show started and those guys never looked back! It should come as no surprise that they opened with “Overcompensate.” Then the rest of the setlist was a nice mix from the rest of their discography. Except Scaled & Icy. Only “Shy Away” made the cut, but given that that is the album their last tour revolved around, it made sense. Instead, we were given more tracks from Vessel which I think will always be my favorite album of theirs. Even Blurryface and Trench had fewer tracks make the cut.

Though I suppose it’s ultimately not surprising, it seemed like almost the entire Clancy album made it into the setlist! That means we got “Routines in the Night,” “Midwest Indigo,” and “Lavish”! I freaking love that song and they were hilarious while performing it. “The Craving” and “Paladin Straight” also made it in, so I just kind of made it through those ones. Even though I knew a four-song encore was coming, I thought the latter was a weird song to end the official set on. I know it closes out the album, but still. Either way, I think these guys could have played the phonebook and that crowd still would have been eating it up. And probably myself, if I’m being honest.

It was a great show and I’m really glad I got the opportunity to go. Catch them now while they’re still on the road! And I will bless you with one of my B-stage shots.
