Just like you, I too, had never heard of the funk band Here Comes the Mummies until 2015 at Cincinnati’s Bunbury Music Festival. They were given a premium slot in the lineup on a Saturday, which I was initially disappointed about because another band had cancelled and this band just seemed weird. Plus, I had never considered myself a fan of funk except for the flirtations Red Hot Chili Peppers did with it.
I was wrong. The set put on by Here Come the Mummies has been one of the most entertaining and memorable performances I have ever seen! Dressed head to toe in your typical mummy wrappings, each member is completely unidentifiable and it’s rumored that the members may all be Grammy winners. How freaking cool is that?! Couple that with the fact that most of their songs are upbeat and mainly sexual innuendos, then it’s no surprise that the entire crowd was into it. I was actually gearing up to see them again in May, but then COVID had to ruin everything. They are definitely on my list, and I think anyone I could convince to go would have an equally magical time. Here’s a short clip to sweeten the pot – enjoy!
