Death From Above 1979 – Is 4 Lovers Album Review

I know a couple months ago I told you all about Death From Above 1979’s newest single, “One + One,” but evidently I didn’t think to look any further into new music from this group. I’m a fool! It’s been out for two month’s now! To make up for it, I ordered some merch along with the album. Now, let’s get down to reviewing Is 4 Lovers.

Truthfully, prior to listening to that single, I had really only been listening to a handful of songs from their first two albums. More specifically, “Government Trash” and “Trainwreck 1979.” Then one day, as I was watching an episode of Silicon Valley, another one of their older songs popped up in the credits and had me thinking about the band the next day. Low and behold new music! Their song in the credits really sparked my desire to listen to Is 4 Lovers straight through immediately. That doesn’t really happen as you can probably tell. Unless I have an undying love for a band, it takes me a hot minute to wrap my head around new music.

This time though, I was glad I did not hesitate! There are some real bangers on this album! Obviously, “One + One” is catchy as hell and very reminiscent of their older sound, but “N.Y.C. Power Elite” parts one and two really had me headbanging. Both were equally as catchy and made a nice pairing of songs. The rest of the album was really quite strong, but another song that really stood out to me was “Love Letter.” This song was basically the opposite of everything I’ve ever known this band to be in that it was only Sebastian’s vocals with a piano. There was no thumping drums or a bass ripping through the lyrics, which made it really nice. In fact, I think I’ve found a new favorite love song!

As I said, almost the rest of the album is strong, so you’re pretty much guaranteed a good time if you decide to queue this up. It also makes me really, really want to see these guys live again! I had never heard of them when they were promoting their second album, The Physical World, with a slot at a local music festival, Rock on the Range, and they really impressed me. That is quite a feat if an “opening” band manages to impress me. Even more so if I’ve never heard of them before. So with that, go listen to Is 4 Lovers, and go see Death From Above 1979 on tour when you can!
