Don Broco – Amazing Things Album Review

Why have I been sleeping on this band?!?! Admittedly, I’m new to Don Broco, and I credit Aussie Metal Heads Nath & Johnny. Seriously, go subscribe to their channel on YouTube.

These British rockers have evidently been on the scene since I was in high school, but their first full-length effort didn’t come until 2012. I’m sure I’ll be listening to their back catalog in the very near future, but I’ve decided to start with their fourth full-length released late last year, Amazing Things. The four dudes in this band can make a lot of noise! And I’m talking the good kind. But then they can flip it on it’s head and add these really neat electronic elements that really put them in a category all on their own. It’s quite a unique sound that I don’t think I’ve heard from anyone yet. There are moments when they remind my of Bring Me the Horizon, or Papa Roach, but it’s only for the briefest of moments, and then their onto something different and wild.

Truly, there wasn’t a single song off this record that was bad. It’s solid all the way through the twelve tracks offered. If I had to pick my top favorites, it’d be “Uber,” “Endorphins,” and “One True Prince.” Both “Gumshield” and “Manchester Super Reds No. 1 Fan” are high up there, too. I think what really makes these songs awesome and ultimately fun are the silly lyrics peppered in most of the tracks. For instance, the song “Bruce Willis” definitely talks about Bruce Willis, quotes his famous Die Hard line, but also manages to incorporate his creepy laugh. Big ups on the creativity for that one. “Easter Sunday” is another track that really stood out to me mainly because of how it ramps up as it goes on, and then manages to swell with a gigantic chorus and strings. Very good closing track.

Aside from creative lyrics, these guys also have the most insanely creative music videos. There’s also a ton of them. I believe at least six of the songs off the record have accompanying videos, and you’ll get to see things like Power Rangers, Bruce Willis, and a trippy boxing match, just to name a few. They add another ridiculous element to the songs, but that only makes them even more likeable. Also, these videos have convinced me I’d love to hang out with these guys. Unfortunately, I caught on to this band’s greatness too late and missed them in any version of a US tour, but who knows, maybe they’ll come back around before working on new music.

I can’t wait to check out the rest of their albums, but in the meantime, you can’t go wrong listening to their most recent offering. Or in any case, just watch the music videos!
