Double Whammy Book Review!

A few weeks back, I finished one of the best books I’ve ever read: The Song of Achilles written by Madeline Miller. This book tells the tale of Achilles but is told through the eyes of Patroclus and with a slightly more romantic edge than what was detailed in Homer’s Iliad.

In fact, we get more of a backstory about Patroclus’ upbringing, and how he came to be in Achilles’ company. What started as a kind of hatred or intolerance soon turned to romantic feelings in their teen years, and as full-fledged adults they were truly the love of each other’s lives.

In reading through a Reddit question and answer with the author, she always thought that the relationship between the two was more than platonic, especially given the way Achilles grieved for Patroclus. It also makes more sense considering the short time between their deaths. Having only read Greek mythology in middle school, I never tread to far into any one entity from that time, so I thought this was quite interesting. The story was also beautifully written. It makes me want to go back and watch the Brad Pitt led movie, Troy, but it also makes me want to see that movie remade today (since we’re on the reboot train). Either way, I highly recommend this book!

I also read a book of short stories, Codename Villanelle by Luke Jennings, which were the inspiration for the critically acclaimed show, Killing Eve. Having not watched the show yet, I wanted to give the book a read before getting into it. From what I can tell, the adaptation may not be word for word from the book, but it definitely follows assassin, Villanelle, and special agent, Eve.

The stories follow separately, Villanelle becoming the cold-blooded assassin that she is, while also detailing some high-profile kills. Eve’s life in comparison is a little mundane, and she has a hard time fitting into most situations but is highly regarded for her skills and commitment for uncovering the truth. Their paths cross when Villanelle kills a political figure that Eve was to have been watching over. It’s now Eve’s mission to find the killer. They only have one encounter in person, and Eve was asleep for it!

There are two other short story compilations focusing on these two women, so I look forward to getting my hands on them! I want to see more interaction between the two of them! I do know the show gets to that point much quicker, so it’s a little more exciting in that regard. Either way, it was an interesting and quick read if that’s what you’re looking to read right now.
