End of October Movie Review

Gosh, I’ve been traveling a bunch and seriously slacking on reviews! Though don’t think that means I didn’t watch any movies – that would be foolish!

Werewolves Within – I know you’ve seen me review this movie two times before, but this time I’m doing it because we just watched it in a new movie club I’m essentially in charge of at work! I wanted to offer something that was more on the silly side of the horror genre, and though most people in the club were pretty meh about the film, I know I certainly enjoyed it again. What struck me this time around was how much it felt like a blend of Fargo and Clue. That intrigued my boss to watch (she just couldn’t fit it in before the meeting). One thing everyone could agree on was how well Sam Richardson did here – a no brainer if you ask me.

Murder Mystery 2 – After much effort in putting this movie off, I wanted something light on the plane into Vegas, so the sequel to the highly terrible Murder Mystery finally made the cut. A year after their adventures in the first film, Nick and Audrey decide to pursue being private detectives full-time. They don’t have much luck until they get invited to their friend’s wedding in Mumbai, where the groom gets kidnapped for ransom. Everyone is a suspect, and there were some stars in this film that I just would have never imagined seeing. Mark Strong and Melanie Laurent, to be more specific. Wild. Similar to the first film, I never found myself laughing that much, but Sandler and Aniston have a fun chemistry that somehow made this outing a little less painful than the first.

Reptile – What struck me most about this new Netflix crime drama was that star Benecio del Toro was a co-writer on the script! How cool! In this, Toro plays cop, Tom, who gets thrown for many loops, all while trying to hold true to why he became a cop in the first place. A young real estate agent is found dead in a home she was selling and there are no shortage of suspects, including her cold and creepy boyfriend, her squirrely soon to be ex-husband, and a greasy man spurned by the boyfriend’s father back in the day. Of course, it’s a cop drama, so it wouldn’t be complete without some drugs and corruption, but I was captivated by how it all tied together. There was a loose end here and there, but I quite liked this!

Suitable Flesh – I had heard about this B-level horror film a few months back and was tickled to see it available to rent just before Halloween weekend. So you know I had to watch it on Halloween! Based on an HP Lovecraft novel, Dr. Liz Derby is a psychiatrist who encounters a patient that will change her life forever. College student, Asa, comes to Derby for help in staying away from his father who is possessed by an entity that wishes for Asa to be his next body. She’s unconvinced until the entity starts targeting her next. This film had way more sex on a Lifetime level than I was expecting, so I was kind of thrown when it switched between those cringy scenes and some actually interesting horror-related ones. I came for Heather Graham and Judah Lewis, but I stayed because I was truly curious how it would all play out. Not bad!
