Greta Movie Review

In a shocking turn of events, I only saw one movie this weekend! I know. I’m as disappointed in me as you must be. Even though I only saw one movie this weekend, I made it count with the campy thriller, Greta, starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert.

Moretz played naive and new resident to New York, Francis, who lives with her cynical and sassy roommate, Erica. While riding the subways of New York, Francis finds an abandoned purse. Rather than waiting to turn it into the lost and found she decides to have faith in humanity and return it in person to the owner and titular character, Greta.

Greta seems normal enough, just a sad, older foreign woman looking for some company. So they strike up a friendship and do a lot together like cooking, adopting a dog, and taking walks. Erica thinks it’s annoying and creepy with how attached Greta is to Francis, but she doesn’t seem to mind it. That’s until she finds a cabinet of purses in Greta’s house! After many attempts to end the friendship and a creepy stalker montage, Greta finally manages to kidnap Francis and hold her hostage in her home using drugged milk.

Francis’ father and Erica reach out to a PI, only for him to show up and get killed by Greta! Francis isn’t a totally hopeless damsel in distress. At one point she attempts escape by chopping Greta’s finger off with a cookie cutter! But that just gets her locked in a box and then gagged and strapped down to a bed. Just when I thought all hope was lost, cynical best friend comes to the rescue! Although Francis, nice girl to the end (sort of), insists on locking Greta in the box rather than making sure she’s dead for sure.

Will there be a sequel? Who knows. I definitely jumped in my seat several times, and Isabelle Huppert was a joy to watch as the crazy captor. Go watch!
