Hacks is back! Well, I mean, it’s done airing all of its second season episodes, but still, it’s back with new stuff! Thank goodness the wait was brief.
We left off with Deborah deciding to go on tour to try out new material after losing her Vegas residency. Ava struggles very briefly in the season before she comes clean to Deborah about that very revealing email she sent to the creators of a new show. Instead of assaulting Ava or firing her, Deborah surprisingly moves on because she know Ava’s talent is worth it. I mean, she does end up suing Ava, but still. The pair make some real headway on a very bougie tour bus, and Deborah even shows she has some heart when she helps Ava find her dad’s ashes in a dumpster (long story). Despite all of the progress Ava thinks they’re making, Deborah still doesn’t feel like she’s hit the nail on the head until very late in the tour, where she starts making things personal, but still being the butt of her own jokes again.
Meanwhile, back home, Marcus is kind of spiraling personally, and even professionally a little bit. Jimmy tries his hardest to get rid of Kayla, but all of his attempts backfire. Those two are my absolute favorite. Each interaction has me in stitches, but also makes me sad that Jimmy can’t see how much Kayla actually idolizes him. She just does it in a really strange and not professional way. He’s glad she’s in her corner in the end, because when Deborah decides to self-fund a special out of her new material, Jimmy gets booted from the firm. Kayla’s got trust fund money, so they decide to start their own company with Deborah as basically their only client. It all pays off though, because the special is a hit! It’s after all of this success when Deborah realizes she’ll only hold Ava back when she decides to fire her.
It’s definitely hard for Ava to hear, and she can’t wrap her head around that Deborah is probably doing her a favor, but this sets up a really unique spot for an already confirmed third season. While there’s tons of new avenues for Ava to go down, I sort of can’t picture what’s next for Deborah. I know there’s more to the story, though, and the creative team behind this show will likely do a fantastic job in telling it. Sure, our main duo might have been out exploring the country, but I felt like this season ended with a much tighter bond between this cast of characters. Until next year!
