Since Halloween was this weekend, I tried to keep my film choices in that vain. And I would say for the most part I did that! They were creepy, gory, and at the very least mentioned the holiday.
Last House on the Left – My sister sort of faked me out with this movie. She had heard that this was one of the most disturbing films someone she knew had ever seen. I’m assuming that friend has not watched a lot of films in their life. Sure, this movie had some unfortunate elements, but it was ultimately a revenge thriller. Although, there was some nicely placed gore in the climax of the film which I appreciated. Not great, not bad, but definitely a good choice to watch this weekend (plus, Spencer Treat Clark from Animal Kingdom!).
Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse – I mean, come on. Obviously I was going to watch this zombie comedy on Halloween. It’s hilariously stupid, but one of my favorite films since I first saw it back in 2015. Excellent gags and some pretty good make-up! Watch this however you can whenever you can.
Mandy – I’ve said it many times before, but Nicolas Cage is living his best life! And he’s making some pretty solid indie flicks. He’s taken his personal crazy and made it work for him. I’d like to think this is the stuff that he really enjoys doing and now he finally can. Mandy is gory, but just like the first film I reviewed, it’s about revenge. Nothing is held back here and it honestly just makes me want to go watch everything Cage has ever done and anything he will do in the future.
Holidate – This screamed “Lifetime” to me, but I am an Emma Roberts fan (Unfabulous!), so ultimately this movie was going to happen. And you know what, for being touted as a Christmas movie, this covered every holiday in a calendar year. So yes, that means Halloween was addressed and it is therefore appropriate for me to have watched this weekend! Since I was expecting a Lifetime-quality movie, I was surprised with the amount of swearing and just general raunchiness of this. But it was great!
