Halloween Weekend Movie Review…Many Days Later

Yes, I know Halloween was already three days ago, but I’ve been busy. That means you get to hear about the spooky movies that made it in for the most recent holiday. Nothing new this week, but you can’t go wrong with these picks.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse – By far, one of my favorite movies out there. It’s a seriously dumb comedy, but it adds the gore with three boy scouts trying to survive a recent zombie outbreak. They team up with a local cocktail waitress with some seriously good survival skills and the results are hilarious. This movie never fails to make me laugh and if you need convincing, just go search for the opening clip on Youtube to sell it to you. I promise you won’t be disappointed, but regardless I know I’ll be watching this every year.

Fear Street: 1994 – I know I raved about this RL Stine trilogy last year, so it only makes sense that I watch them all again. I was secretly hoping for maybe a new film or a series this year, but re-watching these was just as good. In 1994 we get a Scream-esque opening, although we find out who the killer is at the beginning. Or so we think. High schoolers Deena and Sam navigate relationships woes while trying to beat a witch curse that has Sam and a bunch of other ghosts out killing whoever they can. They say Shadyside is cursed, and they’re definitely right. For me, these films inhabit the perfect amount of supernatural scares. Anything more and I don’t know that I would have tuned in.

Fear Street: 1978 – With Sam still cursed, the story gets woven more intricately when Deena meets up with C. Berman, who also survived the curse back in the day at summer camp. Her sister paid the price, along with countless others, but the story here is so interesting along with the aesthetic of the 70s. I know there are other movies and stories out there that follow a summer camp premise, but that stuff never gets old for me. This is probably my favorite film in the trilogy solely for that reason. Did I mention that the soundtracks for these first two films are incredible? Seriously, make more of these movies.

Fear Street: 1666 – The film that ties it all together sees all of our characters from the prior two films get thrown back in time as the townspeople who sentenced Sarah Fier to her fate and ultimately cursed the grounds in Shadyside forever. The twist in this film is incredible and ties everything together nicely in the present. Of course, while we think things are fully resolved, there is definitely room for more stories in the future. I seriously hope that happens. Again, these were all just thrilling and scary enough that I could hang, and I think most people could, too. Go watch these films!
