Hidden Agenda Review

More BL dramas! What else should you be expecting by now? There are just so many and they are right at my fingertips in an endless flow. This time around the internet led me to Hidden Agenda.

Yes, there is some ridiculous soap-opera sheen to some of the scenes in all of the series I’ve watched, but the rest of the show is entertaining enough that I can overlook these moments. There was certainly some of that in this series, but the chemistry was there between Joke and Zo, so I was just fine with how everything turned out. In the series, Zo, a high-achieving debate student, has a crush on fellow debate student, Nita. His friends are finally sick of his pining, so they convince him to ask her ex, Joke, for help. Zo is dead set about not asking the musician for any such thing, but by the end of the first episode, he relents.

As they start spending time together, it’s clear that Joke has a crush on Zo, and that gee, maybe he has a hidden agenda for helping Zo out. Well, it works, because by the end of the fourth episode, Zo shoots his shot with Nita but feels weird about it. He’s also confused about his feelings for Joke, but he at least knows something’s there. Perhaps my biggest complaint of the series was how much flip-flopping Zo did. One minute he was as intimate as he could get with a person, then the next he was spouting how he’s still not sure if he should be focusing his time on a relationship! At least Joke was consistently head over heels in love with Zo.

I also wasn’t crazy about how there wasn’t a longer, over-arching drama. Yes, the ultimate payout of the series was to see if Zo and his debate team could win the big prize that also came along with a study abroad scholarship, but every other little weird obstacle that came through was resolved in one episode. I feel like Nita, and then ultimately Joke’s stalker could have played out for at least a few episodes! There was also some drama added to Joke’s life in the twelfth hour that very much felt like an afterthought. Oh well, overall they tried their best and I was here for it, cheesy and all.

Given that this show just aired earlier this year, I have no clue if there will ever be any special episodes with these two. As with all the BL dramas, I’ll gladly take anything they give me. I do hope to see the main actors work together again, as they had great chemistry both on and off screen. Also, I’d like to see the actors who played secondary characters Jeng, Pok, Wave, and Trin get their own spin off series – there were definitely some intriguing stories there! Overall, I was pleased with this new BL drama, and can’t wait to watch another!
