I love me a good subtitled movie, so there’s no doubt that I would love a subtitled show! Los Espookys is primarily a Spanish series about a group of friends just out trying to scare people.
Renaldo has got a passion for horror, along with his two closest friends, Andres and Ursula. Together the three of them, plus the aid of Ursula’s dimwitted sister, Tati, search for the next great gig. Most of the six episodes are filled with many different scares, but there are a few over-arching storylines that bring everything together by the end of the first season.
Although much more gothic than his surroundings, Andres reminds me of a more flamboyant version of the kid from The Omen. He believes himself to be adopted into a well-to-do family who lord over a chocolate empire. Much of the season lends itself to him trying to learn about his past, but also try and decide if he wants to marry his boyfriend. While he seems unhappy with him, Andres has a fear of living a life without wealth. He also has some hilarious encounters with a strange sea-themed inner demon. Ursula spends most of the season unhappy as a dental assistant, and is constantly looking out to protect Tati. Namely, from a very violent pyramid scheme. Tati has an array of strange jobs when she’s not busy being the experimental part of the gang’s assignments, and she also falls for a cartoon prince (who turns out to be a real prince). All Renaldo wants is to make horror his life, so his main goal is to get to the United States to work on a film for one of his horror idols.
While the team is generally on the same page, with some squabbles in between, it is ultimately Renaldo’s passion to get a visa to travel to the Untied States that ends up disbanding the group. At first, everyone is excited, but there repeated failures in trying to get there manages to dishearten everyone. While Renaldo eventually succeeds in getting there, it’s not all what it’s cracked up to be. Meanwhile, Andres and Ursula learn that the three of them really do make the perfect team because of all of their distinct personalities. Don’t worry though, this is a comedy, so while some serious moments take place, you know it’s going to end in a good spot.
The season also ended in a perfect way to set up a second season, which they luckily will get! I can’t wait to see what wacky directions the next outing will take. I may have described a lot of the main plot of this show, but there were so many little hilarious nuances throughout the show that it would take me forever to cover them all. Plus, those were the moments that had me laughing out loud pretty regularly. If subtitles are no worry to you, then I highly recommend checking this gem out.
