Well, based on how things have been going over at Warner Bros, I can’t say I’m that surprised that Los Espookys, this quirky little comedy, got cancelled back in December not long after airing its second season.
Lucky for us though, there were essentially no loose ends to keep us guessing for eternity. I do hope another network tries to pick this show up though! It’s unique in that it is a somewhat mainstream Spanish-speaking comedy, but it’s also just one of the oddest things I’ve ever watched. Just like the first season, I was surprised at how much I laughed out loud at this show, but also how invested I was in these bonkers storylines! Now that the world of Los Espookys was established from the first season, it was easy to fall back into a rhythm and just follows these characters on whatever insane journeys they went on.
Of course, at the crux of each episode, the Los Espookys team gets hired to pull some sort of horror-related prank that everyone always falls for. That’s something I really like about the show, because even though the pranks aren’t super high quality, it’s nice to see something a group of friends worked really hard on pay off. Usually in a hilarious way. This season though also saw our four main characters, plus Renaldo’s Uncle Tico, try to get some big answers in their lives.
Renaldo is being haunted by the ghost of the most recent winner of the Latina beauty pageant and it’s got him questioning many facets of his life. He ultimately learns that while he likes to help other people, it’s okay to help himself from time to time, too. Ursula is making it her mission to get the current president out of office, but it’s kind of hard when the opponent isn’t much better. Kind of like politics in the US, she’s picking the lesser of two evils. Tati’s marriage to cookie billionaire and Andres’ ex, Juan Carlos comes to an end in a way that had me cackling, so she decides to take up writing…kind of. Finally, Andres spends most of the season trying to become rich again without really trying. The true dream. He ultimately learns that he needs to be a better friend.
All in all, I’m glad I got to spend time with this quirky little show. If you’re up to some alternative and sometimes ludicrous comedy, then give this gem a chance. At least for as long as HBO Max lets it stay on their streaming platform.
