Mega Movie Weekend

I guess I don’t mean “mega” as in blockbusters, I just mean I watched six movies in three days. That would be a mega achievement for almost anyone, myself included. I will say though, that most of these were pretty mediocre, but that’s just the way it is sometimes. I won’t bore you with the details, so here’s my fast-take below:

Guns Akimbo – Opposite of what I just said above, this movie was actually pretty fun. Daniel Radcliffe continues to make the most bizarrely eclectic film choice post-Harry Potter, and I am loving them all for the most part. He plays Miles, who gets guns bolted to his hands and is forced to fight to the death in a near future underground fight-club. Samara Weaving plays his bleached eyebrow and neck tattooed opponent.

Akransas – Holy boring, Batman. So, so boring. And I was sad about that, because I saw the name Clark Duke and it was supposed to be a thriller! It was not thrilling, thanks in no part to the jerky time jumps and Liam Hemsworth and Vince Vaughn. I know these people can all do better, they have, and they should. Avoid at all costs.

The Three Musketeers – This is not the first time I’ve watched The Three Musketeers, but there’s been a healthy seven year gap, if I’m not mistaken. I also believe I watched this the first time for either Logan Lerman or Christoph Waltz’s presence, but now I know so many more people in this! Seriously, this cast is stacked. While it’s your pretty run-of-the-mill action film, there was a fair dose of laughs, and it was pretty entertaining throughout it’s almost two hour runtime. Give it a go if you’ve got Showtime.

The Trust – What a strange little Netflix thriller. It’s got Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood, so I was expecting something a little off-beat, but this was an oddball delight! Both cops and unhappy with their jobs, Wood’s character joins Cage’s for a safe heist that is pretty involved. There’s some intense twists and a good deal of blood, but you should watch for Cage’s, once again, unhinged performance. I edit my statement from Mom and Dad, he’s just living his best film life in general at the moment. Kudos for him.

Donnybrook – Starring Jamie Bell and Frank Grillo, I really wanted to like this, and the premise seemed interesting, but this was rather slow and a bit boring. Grillo plays a psychotic meth dealer, and Bell plays a military vet who’s looking for a fight to make money for his family. They both meet up at the Donnybrook for the final showdown and lots of hits are taken. Grillo just didn’t talk enough for my taste, really.

Creep – Not to be confused with The Lonely Island song, “The Creep,” this little horror gem on Netflix stars one of my favorites, Mark Duplass. He plays a murderer who lures a videographer, Aaron, to a cabin in the woods. It’s a game of cat and mouse, but there is Creep 2, so you can sort of guess what happens.
