I managed to shove quite a few movies into this normal, non-holiday weekend. Some of them were brand new (to streaming services, of course), while others were new to me, while the rest were just some of my old favorites. I won’t bore you with the details this time, so there’s just a tease below.
The Old Guard – This new action film on Netflix starring Charlize Theron is nowhere near Atomic Blonde, but it is badass in its own way, and it was certainly never boring. She plays Andy, the leader of a small group of immortals who fight for what they believe is right. After centuries together, a new immortal emerges, and they band together to save themselves from a money hungry scientific endeavor. With a much more impressive supporting cast then I initially knew about, this movie was quite entertaining. I say give it a go!
Palm Springs – I have been highly anticipating this film ever since I heard about it at the start of the year. Yes, part of that was because it received the highest selling price at Sundance ever, and it was by The Lonely Island. It was like a rom-com meets Groundhog’s Day, with plenty of laughs and physical comedy. An excellent supporting cast makes this a must watch while you’re still quarantining.
The 10-Year Plan – I was pretty nervous about this at the start. I couldn’t tell if the acting was terrible or not…I mean it was by no means great, but it didn’t hinder the the film as much as I had feared. Two friends make a pact that if they are both single by the time they reach 35, then they will date each other. Well, you guessed it, the ten-year mark is drawing near and one of them is still single and playing the filed (by choice) while the other just comes on too strong in relationship after relationship. While this was also sold as a rom-com, I found myself never actually laughing but at least smiling. Very cute.
The Peanut Butter Falcon – I’m pretty sure I gave this a rave review last year and it made it into my 2019 top 10, so obviously this was just a great this time around. And sort of Huckleberry Finn-type tale, it follows degenerate Tyler as he helps Zak travel to pursue his dream of going to wrestling camp. Adorableness ensues.
4th Man Out – I very near watching this for the tenth time in under a year, but like I’ve said before, this is just a nice a funny comedy about friendship. I cannot recommend enough! And I recently had the opportunity to speak to the two stars, Evan Todd (Adam) and Parker Young (Chris) over a group chat. So freaking fun!
