I may not be able to see brand spanking new movies in the theater, but that doesn’t stop me from watching a myriad of older ones that have been on my radar for quite some time. It also helps that I have cable and a bunch of streaming services (priorities, people!). All of that combined with a few days I took off means I got to watch a bunch of movies!
The Overnight – Wowzers. This movie was all sorts of quirky, but all you really need to know is that a small family that just moved to California gets invited over for a play-date for their kids that ends up turning into an orgy for the parents. If you’re up for it, Hulu’s got you covered on this one.
Life Like – The acting wasn’t all that great in this obviously low-budget film, but the concept was pretty cool. Young couple, James and Sophie, recently move into James’ deceased father’s mansion. Rather than bossing around hired help, they buy a super-realistic looking AI to help out. Feelings ensue, and that robot may just be real after all. Skip it, honestly.
Game Over, Man! – I’ve still got Workaholics on my list of shows to watch, but I’ve seen the three stars in enough stand alone films that I knew I was going to watch this dumb comedy. And that’s definitely what it was, a dumb comedy. But I enjoy that kind of stuff, so if you want some cheap laughs, and maybe some full frontal male nudity, then check this out on Netflix.
A Kid Like Jake – I suppose this would be hard for me to relate to since I don’t have children, but this centers around a couple who are trying to craft the perfect essay to get their son into a respectable preschool. Oh yeah, and their son might be struggling with gender identity? Either way, the dialogue was at least interesting. If this isn’t your bag, pass.
Grandma’s Boy – From the depths of 2006, this movie follows a man in his mid-thirties who tests video games for a living who just moved in with his grandma and her two roommates. Honestly, this had me laughing way too hard at some parts, but what I can I say? A stoner film featuring Nick Swardson, Linda Cardellini, and Owen from DodgeBall means I’m going to like this regardless.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch – Man, I really need to pay more attention to the fact that movie musicals are something I’m just not going to like! Loved the concept of this film, and at least if featured mainly rock tracks, but there were just so many songs, and I just like dialogue more.
The Darjeeling Limited – Since I consider Wes Anderson to be one of my favorite directors, I’ve decided to go back in his catalog and watch some of his earlier films, so that led me to The Darjeeling Limited. This film follows three brothers on a train making it’s way through India. It’s clear their relationship is tense, but also filled with love as they reminisce about their recently deceased father, while also trying to find their mother. It’s a Wes Anderson film, so of course it’s quirky, but I think the oddest thing about it is trying to believe that Owen Wilson would be related to Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. Totally recommend, though!
