Movie Review: Good Boys

Since I’ve got a fairly busy weekend ahead of me, my sister and I decided to go see the Seth Rogan produced, Good Boys, last night. This was hands down the funniest movie I’ve seen all year! It was absolutely hysterical. I will say that since I’ve only seen Jacob Tremblay in dramas, and he’s been previously nominated for a SAG award, it was hard for me to reconcile seeing him in this raunchy comedy. Either way, it was fantastic.

The movie focuses on newly minted sixth graders, nice guy Max, theater nerd Thor, and gentle giant Lucas. They’re “bean bag boys for life,” but are all experiencing new things in this phase of their lives like Max going through the early stages of puberty, Thor getting called names, and Lucas’ parents getting divorced. They push all those things aside for a short bit once they get invited to the cool kids “kissing party,” except…they don’t know how to kiss.

They decide to spy on Max’s older neighbor and her boyfriend to learn how to kiss using his dad’s work drone. It ends up getting destroyed so they are on a quest to get money to buy a new one, while also avoiding the girls since they stole their party drugs as leverage. I can’t say too much that’s A.) appropriate and B.) a spoiler, but there are plenty of f-bombs and crude humor, so if that’s what you like this movie is totally up your alley!

Despite the focus on the boys, there are also a car load of wonderful adult cameos by Lil Rel Howrey, Rhetta, Will Forte, Stephen Merchant, and Sam Richardson. Big ups to creepy Stephen Merchant and fed up cop Sam Richardson. All their parts were small but impactful, for sure. There’s also a quality/questionable musical number towards the end so get ready for that. One-liners were equal between all the boys, including some epic burns about one popular kid’s parents. Like I said, if you like raunchy comedies, than this is a gem of a film for you!
