Mr. Robot Season 4 Premiere Review

Well folks, if you haven’t watched last night’s final season premiere of Mr. Robot, then be prepared for SPOILERS! That’s all the warning I’ll give you.

We’ve waited a solid year and a half for this final season to air, and I have to say, while it wasn’t by far the best episode I’ve ever seen, it was a pretty damn good one! The “previously on” section merged straight into the first scene of the episode and it was Angela’s last! That was crazy to me. I had dove deep into some Reddit theories in the past few weeks and most of them centered around Angela being a big part of the final story. Hoo boy, I bet all those people were surprised! Quite honestly, her actions in season three left a sour taste in my mouth, so I wasn’t all that sad to see her go.

After Angela’s murder, we fast forward two months into the throws of Christmastime. We see Elliot and Mr. Robot functioning as a team rather than one verses the other, and their main objective is to stop Whiterose. They have different ways of going about it and you can tell Elliot is partially distracted by Angela’s death, so we get Mr. Robot as narrator this season. They know their time is short, so they are trying what they know best, exploiting people, but that backfires so, so badly for them. By the end of it, Elliot is injected with an overdose and we see him DIE before being brought back to life by Phillip Price. At this moment, I’m unsure of what their relationship will be by the end of the season – teammates? I would assume that since they have Angela in common that Price will eventually backstab Whiterose and her vicious plans.

While most of the episode stayed with Elliot and Mr. Robot, we do get a glimpse into the lives of everyone else after season three’s events. Dom is reacting poorly to being forced into the Dark Army, Darlene is taking a lot of drugs to cope with Angela’s death, and Tyrell is miserable at his post as the CTO of E-Corp. We also got a few fun cameos this episode from Emmy Rossum, Sam Esmail’s wife, and a cameo from the man himself as the one who injects Elliot with a stone cold “Goodbye, friend.” All of these supplemental characters were reintroduced at just the right amount before we launch into the rest of the season. I know the common enemy is Whiterose, and I am eager to see how they all end up working together.

Welcome back, friend.
