My Love Mix-Up Series Review

I felt like I’ve been in a bit of a BL slump lately, but I was surprised to see that this whole series had just finished airing and I hadn’t heard that much about it! Re-teaming Fourth and Gemini in the Thai version of the Japanese original, My Love Mix-Up! ended up being a much better BL than their original series.

Admittedly, I wasn’t as big of a fan of My School President as most of the rest of the world was, so I was reluctant to watch another series with these two as leads. There was something about Fourth’s character in that series that rubbed me the wrong way. A little bit of that seemed present in this series, but he was mostly a hopeless romantic and extremely silly and that suited him well here. The premise of the series started with Atom crushing hard on fellow classmate, Mudmee. As is a silly tradition, if you write your crushes name on an eraser, they will fall in love with you. Imagine his surprise when he thinks he sees another classmates name, Kongthap, on her own eraser. Atom drops it, Kongthap picks it up, and then suddenly everything changes.

Kongthap has never thought romantically about anyone before, let alone a boy, but he’s not willing to rule anything out without giving it the old college try. Atom plays along with it initially in an effort to keep him away from Mudmee, but very quickly Atom learns he might actually have a crush on Kongthap. It also helps that in talking with Mudmee, she had actually written their friend Half’s name on her eraser, so that kind of tied that up neatly. Instead, for the rest of the series Atom and Mudmee are besties trying to help each other land their crushes. Atom has infinitely more luck than Mudmee, and it even got to the point where I was really not looking forward to Mudmee and Half’s interactions.

Kongthap came around much more quickly to Atom’s attempts. Even when it seemed like they were really dating and Kongthap was for sure into Atom, he still made it sound like he was trying to figure it out. They eventually did and had the support of a teacher who also ended up with his school crush. Friends, the teacher and his longtime boyfriend were SO CUTE. Anyway, the only obstacles that really seemed to stand in the way of Atom and Kongthap’s happiness were figuring out which university they were going to end up at, and letting their moms know about the relationship.

Overall, I thought this series was really sweet. For the most part it was light and fluffy, and I thought Fourth and Gemini had incredible chemistry this time around. I know they’re still young, but I’ll be interested to see what more mature stories come their way in the future.
