My time is spent on too many other media formats to really bother much with podcasts, but the two I’m about to talk about have been totally worth listening to.
I can’t tell you the number of times friends or co-workers have recommended podcasts to me. And while yes, I’m sure I would really appreciate Armchair Expert, Smartless, or Happy Sad Confused, I simply would rather be watching, reading, or listening (music) to other things. With that being said, the dudes from Workaholics could not have picked a better time to release their own podcast last year, called This Is Important. I don’t think much time at all had passed since I’d finished watching the show when they announced it coming out. Needless to say, I was giddy. More of the dude-bros together? Sign me up! Truly, it is Adam Devine, Anders Holm, Blake Anderson, and Kyle Newacheck together once a week talking about absolute and utter nonsense.
Seriously, these guys don’t have any real trajectory for their podcast and that’s what makes it such a joy to listen to! At first I thought it was going to be a Workaholics centered show, but very quickly was proven that was not going to be the case. They talk about legitimately anything, and every week my sister has to check in to see if I’m okay because I’m laughing so hard. This podcast is also pretty explicit, as they take the time to talk about wiping, porn, and old fashion trends. Adding to the chaos is a soundboard that Anderson quickly put together after just a few episodes. I personally enjoy when he adds a new soundbite that gets Ders to laugh. Most recently, “you’re boobs are huge” got added and it makes him laugh every time Blake plays it. I’d like to think this is a nice little prep for when the Workaholics movie comes to our screens, but I hope it never ends.
Another podcast that’s more recently made it into rotation is the It’s Always Sunny Podcast. Similar to This Is Important, once a week, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day get together to talk about an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. While most of the episodes that have aired so far center on an episode of the show (only into season two so far), the conversation tends to always deviate from the topic. A big point of contention so far has been their opinions of parking in a deck at the studio they are recording at. My personal favorite deviation came a couple episodes ago when Rob told a very involved story regarding a drive-thru line at an In-and-Out Burger. Such detail, and so ridiculously funny. Another thing the guys just picked up last week is that they are also dropping video of them recording their podcast. This Is Important have been doing this, too, and while sometimes I watch, I almost find more enjoyment just listening and picturing what’s happening in the room. I also tend to be drawing while I’m listening to these podcasts.
Overall, I am not a podcast person, and I would not say that what I’m listening to has much cultural impact or social importance, but all of these dudes are hilarious and they bring a smile to my face a gut busting laughter into my day. So for that, I will say listen to these two podcasts, especially if you are fans of the shows.
