Mythic Quest – Season 3 Review

It truly felt like a lifetime had passed since the last season of Mythic Quest dropped on Apple+. Wikipedia tells me it’s just been a year and some change, so I guess that’s what a pandemic does to time. Or, given how quickly I just watched the third season, that’s probably what actually ended up happening.

The new season starts by showing where everyone is at one year after the events of the season two finale. That means we see Ian and Poppy presenting their new company’s game, Hera, to some venture capitalists. We see Brad getting out of prison for good behavior, Rachel and Dana making long distance work while they both attend classes, and surprisingly, David is kind of thriving without Ian or Poppy around. Of course, it all starts out that way, but CW unexpectedly dies at the end of the first episode (I assume he was working on The White Lotus when this was filming) and then everyone seems to be falling off their axis’s.

The GrimPop offices looks so futuristic it almost hurts my eyes, but Ian and Poppy get a 50 million dollar offer that Poppy ends up turning down because of the pair’s miscommunication. From there, Poppy is working on a slice of the game to present to other investors, but learns that she’s more of the builder and that’s a hard pill for her to swallow. On the other end of that, Ian feels kind of useless since Hera is Poppy’s brainchild. In true Ian form though, he spends most of the season in a self-centered fashion. Similar to past seasons, the pair have a huge blow-up, but end up making amends by leaning hard into their strengths as individuals in this partnership. More on that later.

David reluctantly allows head of HR and now diversity and inclusion, Carol, to hire a morally reformed Brad as MQ’s janitor. He decent back into darkness is slow and maybe not as a extreme as before, but I’ll be interested to see if he reverts all the way back and then some next season. Meanwhile, Jo is still really aggressive, but is actually the perfect assistant to David. She helps him out and pushes him when needed, and those moments ultimately pay off big time for him. David likes being in control, although still manages to get walked on in moments. His biggest adventure of the season is spearheading a movie adaptation of Mythic Quest.

I don’t want to spoil everything that goes down this season, but be prepared for another shuffling of people. Some leave, some come, but I will say it will lend itself to some interesting pairings next season. Not unexpectedly, I laughed out loud a fair amount this season. I was especially happy to see Derek Waters back as the put upon Phil, and I was even more excited to see Uncle Jack and the waiter show up as new testers in the finale episode of the season. This was the Sunny reunion I didn’t know I needed! Please go watch this very fun show if you haven’t already.
