2023 is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to new music. I am here for it!
Queens of the Stone Age
“Emotion Sickness” – A sweet, sweet surprise! These guys haven’t released anything since 2017’s Villains, which I loved, and could totally kick myself for never going to see them when they toured it. Anyways, this new track seems like the perfect building block from that album. While it’s not exactly the same (and why would it be?), there were a few elements reminiscent of that sound, but then it also morphs into something a little bit 70s once the chorus hits. Josh Homme’s got a voice like no other and his mix of gravely verses with that heavenly falsetto are a perfect match. I was also a big fan of the slow fade out at the end. This is just the beginning for their June 16th release, In Times New Roman… – I can’t freaking wait!
30 Seconds to Mars
“Stuck” – I approached this new song with some extreme reservations. Their last album did not land with me, so I was expecting more of the same. I was kind of right. There is nothing really rock left about these guys, but there is no denying it’s a catchy pop song. Give it a few months and I guarantee this song will be EVERYWHERE. I found myself singing the chorus and the back beat throughout the whole day after hearing it the first time. But, just because something is catchy, doesn’t mean it will earn a spot in my life. Of course, I’m still looking forward to a new album whatever the outcome may be. If you want your next party song, look no further.
The Pink Spiders
“Gold Confetti” – The year? 2006. The album? Teenage Graffiti? The Band? The Pink Spiders. I was obsessed with that album. From there though, I never really went anywhere with them. In all honesty, I had no clue they were still a band. It doesn’t appear that anyone besides front man Matt Friction, has remained from some of the original incantations of the band, but that’s enough. And I also figured out that they’re going on tour! You know I snatched up a ticket as soon as I found out. I’d like to think me spotting one of their stickers at the Grog Shop last year is what set this all in motion…for me anyways. Even though this new track sounds nothing like that incredible album, this song was instantly catchy. I’m still singing it to myself.
Crown the Empire
“Superstar” – This was a forced recommendation by my sister, but dammit it if this song isn’t catchy as hell. I know that this band has been around for a good bit of time. Heck, they’ve probably even opened for several concerts and played at a bunch of festivals I’ve been to, but I’ve never felt compelled to give them the time of day. Truthfully I probably still won’t, but kudos to them for getting a song in rotation. From my understanding, this banger sounds absolutely nothing like their other stuff. Sometimes that’s a great thing and other times that sucks, but as far as I can see it’s a win for them. It’s all about being famous and not caring or having any responsibilities. As I said, catchy as hell, and I was surprised at how well Palaye Royale’s Remington Leith’s vocals fit into this track. Seamless.
The Beaches
“Blame Brett” – It’s hard to believe these guys are only going to be releasing their second studio album. And if this new single is anything to go by – no sophomore slump for them! This is a solid and fun pop-rock jam. The vocals are strong, the harmonies are delightful, and I can’t get enough of the lead guitar and drums! I found The Beaches one hundred percent on accident opening for a band I honestly can’t even remember now. It’s not often that female musicians make an impact on me, so it’s really saying something that these guys did. Go check out their old stuff, then hop on over to this new and infectious single!
