New Music – Singles Edition!

There have been so many new songs released over the past few weeks and I have been seriously slacking on checking them out. Thus, you get a bunch all at once. Go check these out for yourselves!

Taking Back Sunday
“The One” – A straight up love song. I don’t know if I’d ever expect to hear something like that from a band like this. It’s nothing slow and painful, but more of a mid-tempo, rather radio freindly, rock song that I’d love for people to start using at weddings instead of Christina Perry or Ed Sheeran. Please. You’ll be making a better choice.

Underoath
“Lifeline (Drowning)” – One of two new songs I had the pleasure of hearing a few weeks ago live and in person. Again, I have no clue if this means a new album in the near future or not. I imagine they are trying to see what they can create as a five-piece now. Still love hearing Spencer getting the chance to sing. His and Aaron’s voices work so well together.

Miles Kane
“The Wonder” – This is slick! The chorus is catchy as hell, and there are still plenty Kane’s signature guitar licks. I really enjoy the crescendo in the last bit coupled with a really cool vocal manipulation. It’s crazy to me how different this sounds compared to all the work he released on Change the Show – last year!

Declan McKenna
“Sympathy” – His last full-length effort sadly coincided with the pandemic, so as time goes, it felt like no time at all has passed. But we’ve been blessed with a new, wholly unique, and surprisingly fresh song from Declan McKenna. The song definitely boasts a positive message with a upbeat and simple tune mainly featuring horns. More and more McKenna’s vocals remind me of Matt Shultz from Cage the Elephant and that’s not a bad thing!

Ghost
“Stay” featuring Patrick Wilson – Yes, you read that right. Patrick Wilson. The actor. He is featured on a Ghost song that was contributed for the latest Insidious movie. The song being featured on this horror film is not a surprise, but aside from Wilson’s guest vocals being so shocking, it is also how subdued and slow most of this track is. Compare this to the EP they just released it’s so hard to ignore the insane range they have! I know Wilson has his own band, but I’m hoping he hops up on stage with them somewhere during their fall tour. That would be incredible!

Royal Blood
“Pull Me Through” – This is so, so different from anything I’ve ever heard these guys release. The chorus picks up the pace in a more rock sensibility, but the verses incorporate Ben’s signature drumming with a PIANO. It sounds like something that would get played at a swanky, laid back night club. I know that there will have to be another person involved in the live performance of this, but as long as they don’t get too carried away with the extra musicians, I’m down. Mike’s vocals are really controlled and quite beautiful, too.

30 Seconds to Mars
“Get Up Kid” and “Life is Beautiful” – Both of these recently released singles have a lot in common. Both trend a bit on the slower side, have very positive messages, and are so generically pop. I understand that their first single was also insanely poppy, but these barely have anything that make them recognizable to the band. I understand that sound can change, but I don’t feel that they have been changing for the better. All this negativity to say that I am still looking forward to a full release. Maybe they’ll surprise me.
