After finishing My Personal Weatherman, I decided I wanted some more Japanese BLs in my life, and the general consensus online was to check out this quick little series, Old Fashion Cupcake.
Well, your girl loves cupcakes, so that was an easy choice. It also helps that this series has actually been on my watch list for quite some time. I just finally got the little inspiration and push I needed to watch it. And I’m so glad I did! This series was so cute, and I personally would love a second season. You know, if anyone is out there to be influenced by my lonesome review.
In the series, Nozue, a 39 year old man, feels stuck in his everyday routine which mainly involves work and sleep. Even though he thrives at work, he doesn’t feel compelled to take on any promotions offered to him. This melancholy is noticed by his 29 year old subordinate, Togawa. They are out on break one day for lunch when Togawa insists that stop at a pancake shop to eat. The shop’s clientele is mainly women and girls, but Togawa explains that if they start adopting some of the outlooks of these girls that they can become more youthful.
Though initially embarrassed, Nozue finds that he enjoys all of these offbeat and bubbly places that Togawa takes him to. He doesn’t really start to notice when he develops feelings for Togawa, but Togawa’s biggest secret is that he’s been harboring the same feelings for Nozue since the met. Perhaps Togawa’s plan to seduce Nozue is “sinister” to some, but to me, it was super cute watching him help Nozue find happiness in his every day life again. The conflict is brief, and given Japan’s outlook on queerness, a bit sad, but Nozue seems to have no regrets on his time with Togawa and wants to spend more of it with him.
Gosh, did I mention this series was hella cute? Because it was. So much so that I would like to see more from this pairing in this world. Though it did wrap up nicely, there would certainly be room for more story in this world. In any case, these two actors have terrific chemistry, so maybe I’ll just settle for seeing them work together in something again. Fingers crossed!
