People’s Choice Awards – The Most Confusing Popularity Contest

While the Grammy’s are frustrating in the way that they almost completely ignore rock, the People’s Choice Awards are frustrating in that seriously poor performances win all of the awards!

Exhibit A lies in the fact that Cole Sprouse beat out the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Male Actor in a Drama. Exhibit B is when Murder Mystery took home Best Movie….did these people watch any other movie this year?!

All of that exasperation aside, it’s still a relatively fun show to watch. It praises all of Marvel’s endeavors, as well as a plethora of other (maybe unwanted) categories. I’m sorry, but who is voting for Best Reality Competitor and why was that one of the categories presented live? Either way, we saw some fun winners in Robert Downey Jr and Zendaya, and it was nice to see Kevin Hart back out and about after his car crash.

While I ragged on Cole Sprouse earlier, I did like that he devoted most of his acceptance speech to talk about what his film was for, bringing attention to Cystic Fibrosis – bravo! I also really enjoyed listening to Adam Sandler give an almost awkward speech about Icon Award recipient, Jennifer Aniston, Their friendship is too pure!

The musical performances of the evening were mediocre at best, but there was lots of fun to be had in the crowd. This is a nice fun way to kick off awards season, so I’ll give it a pass. Click here to check out all the award winners of the night.
