For those of you that liked the raunchy comedies Neighbors, your favorite duo of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have reunited! But this time it’s on the small screen and as completely platonic best friends. As you may have just read, the series is also called Platonic.
And let me just give you a big old spoiler – they seriously stay strictly PLATONIC best friends. I loved this! Why can’t people have best friends of the opposite sex? Makes no sense. Anyways, we meet Sylvia and Will separately, but each kind of at a crossroads in their lives. Sylvia gave up her job at a law firm when her and her husband, Charlie decided to have kids, but now they are all in school. She’s kind of aimless. Will just got divorced and has found that his ex is moving on a lot quicker than he is. He’s also finding that his ideas are clashing with his other good friend and investor about the bar they started up together. Sylvia reaches out about the divorce, and what starts as a slightly awkward reuniting soon turns into a good old hang that appears effortless.
Will’s ex says that the two are destructive when they are together and never liked that the two were good friends, but luckily Charlie is more on board with their rekindled friendship. Sure, he has his doubts a time or two and I don’t blame him. That’s what society wants people to think all the time! He’s conditioned to have doubts! Luckily, their marriage is strong and communicative enough that they work through it pretty quickly. Sylvia and Will are so fun to watch on screen. They kind of remind me of me and my sister. They are both supportive of each other, confide in each other for everything, push each other to take a leap of faith sometimes, and make up after arguments almost right after they happen. That is a best friend!
The supporting cast is fine, but the real light shines on Rogen and Byrne. I found myself with either a smile on my face or laughing out loud for pretty much the entire run of this show. There are plenty of sentimental moments, but you won’t need your tissues. I was pretty confident they’d stick the landing and although it ultimately ends in a way I wasn’t anticipating, I still think there’s plenty of an opportunity to move forward with a second season. This wasn’t presented as a limited or miniseries, so I am hopeful for more! Please check this out, I promise you will be happy you did.
