Roswell, New Mexico – Final Season Review

Truthfully, I’m shocked this show ever even got four seasons, but that doesn’t mean I’m still not sad that it’s really over. Yes, the lucky wave that Roswell, New Mexico has been able to ride for the past four seasons is finally over.

I know in the past I’ve reviewed this show on a weekly basis, but other, HBO Max shows, switched up my priorities a little bit. Thus, you’re going to hear all about it at once. Even though there’s always turmoil with the Roswell clan, this season actually started out on a high note for everyone! Michael moved in with Alex, Liz and Max finally had nothing putting their love in jeopardy, Isobel is in a shiny, new relationship, Dallas is honing his powers, Rosa is slaying at art school in New York, and Kyle finally doesn’t have to deal with any weird alien stuff. Of course, only good stuff wouldn’t make for interesting television, so it all turns to shit going into the second hour.

Alex is assigned to go look into weather balloons giving off some strange findings. Turns out, they’re related to a new, ominous, and (obviously) bad triad in town. Alex gets the short end of the stick and gets sent to another dimension without anyone being the wiser. The triad is made up of brainwashed leader, Tezca, and her followers are the more sinister Clyde, and the happy-go-lucky Bonnie. While Clyde is focused on the mission of gathering everything Jones had told them they’d need to get back home and take over Oasis, Bonnie has grown quite fond of Earth and all of its eccentricities. She at least also recognizes that not everything is rainbows and butterflies.

Once this new threat is identified, everyone puts their heads down and gets to work. This forces Maria to hone in on a new power emerging, Rosa to come back and assist, and Dallas to also really step it up. This new threat also kind of dooms Isobel’s new relationship pretty quickly, but she manages to rebound with Kyle by the end of it. What a weird circle of relationships this show has. Problems in life always leads to problems for Liz and Max, so they spend most of the season yelling at each other, then forgiving each other, and ultimately getting engaged after a no-go the first time around early in the season.

For all of the drama this group had to face this season, there were some interesting team-ups, and of course plenty of drama. Naturally, the arc ended in the last two episodes, so for the latter half of the series finale we were treated to blissfully happy endings for all of our characters! Perhaps the most exciting, and deserving, was that Malex wedding! As Michael Vlamis stated in an Instagram post, “if you don’t cry, then you don’t have a soul.” He’s right, of course! And yes, Liz and Max got officially engaged, and Maria found love and safety with Dallas, but their boys decided that they needed to actually go back home to save their planet. That’s quite the cliffhanger, but considering this show didn’t know this would be their last season, I felt that it was a really good spot to end it. Others might not feel the same, but I, at least, am satisfied. It’s been a ride!
