You read that right, the series finale of Schitt’s Creek aired on Tuesday night, and it feels like the saddest ending of an era. Even though I was a latecomer to this hilarious Canadian comedy, it took approximately five episodes for me to fall in love with these people, and I mean more than just the Roses. So sadly, this is the last time you’ll ever be reading about Schitt’s Creek here.
Since I didn’t really write about this show all season, I’ll do my best with the highest level recap I can muster. Moira had a successful streaming release of her Crows movie, so naturally, when her old soap, Sunrise Bay, announces a reboot, the creators want her back. After some work, it finally pulls through the way she requested and deserves. Johnny and Stevie, along with Roland, decide to franchise the motel. There was a really uncomfortable pitch scene, but it ultimately all works out for the three of them. Poor Alexis and Ted break things off amicably because they are both becoming better versions of themselves. Alexis decides to move back to New York in order to further her career.
It comes as no surprise that the series itself was going to end with David and Patrick’s wedding. That’s what all fourteen episodes have been leading up to. What revelations did come in the penultimate episode, was that Patrick had been looking at houses for his future spouse, so David decides to stay in Schitt’s Creek. Rose Apothecary will already be moving up in the world thanks the franchising of the motel. On the day of the wedding itself, David is obviously stressed, so Patrick’s arranged a massage that leaves David with a pre-marital “happy ending.” As something that could have been potentially disastrous for normal couples is just another part of the pair’s relationship, and the scene was absolutely hysterical. And it’s a good thing! Be prepared for tears when watching the whole wedding sequence. I was blinking tears back into my face for the fifteen minutes!
So yes, everyone got their happy ending and proper goodbyes, and it’s about as perfect a finale as I’ve ever seen. It’s the finale the show and its fans deserved. And surprising to me, Dan Levy revealed in the special that aired after the finale that the entire sixth season was already written by the time the world caught up to becoming obsessed with this gem! You also read that right, there was a special after the finale! For an entire hour, we got a peek behind the curtain to see how the show operated for its last outing, so that means you should be prepared for more tears. I’m surely going to miss this show, and I will surely be re-watching it in my future.
