Man, Seether was not asleep at the wheel this past year. Already, they released a brand new album not even a year ago and just last week dropped a new EP titled Purgatory! I love seeing bands take advantage of a non-touring year!
The five-track EP features some pretty solid tracks. In listening to all of them on a first go, their song “Save Today” kept coming to mind. Not that any of the songs sounded the same, but they just gave off a similar vibe. Considering I love that song, I was definitely not made about that! Perhaps the lead track, ‘Wasteland,” was most reminiscent of that older song, which means it was my favorite off of the EP. It was just a perfect mix of things like the pacing and vocals, and I really hope to hear it on Octane sometime in the near future. The fifth track on the EP was an alternate version of that song, which to me just sounded more acoustic in nature. Equally as good though!
The rest of the songs off the EP were all pretty similar in tempo for the most part, so none of them really stood out to me as much as the title track. However, as any good Seether song goes, the lyrical content of these songs are just Shaun Morgan’s soul laid bare. I think every human on this planet can relate to loneliness at least a little bit, although his seems more isolating at times than others. I suppose if I had to pick a least favorite track off of this EP, it would probably be “Feast or Famine.” It sounded a bit corny to me. I mean, as corny as a Seether song could sound, I suppose. It was still heavy and dealt with similar lyrical subject matter, but all of it combined just didn’t resonate that well with me.
Overall though, this was a fantastic EP, and I’m so excited to have gotten new music from Seether less than a year after their last full-length! I know they’re on tour this fall, but sadly not in my neck of the woods. Here’s hoping they swing around next year!
