Slow Movie Weekend

I say it was a slow movie weekend only because I didn’t watch nine of them like I did last week. I watched a respectable three, but only one new one. But sometimes it’s nice to revisit old favorites.

For instance, I watched Inception for the first time in a decade, even though I’ve owned the film for a very long time. I have to say, ten years in between watching a movie really makes some stuff stand out, especially since I was right out of high school when this hit the big screen. Sure, that ambiguous spinning top at the end was just as perplexing as it was the first time (I think he’s still dreaming), but I just caught so many more details. It honestly baffles me how Christopher Nolan was able to come up with all the intricacies of this film, and then pull it off so masterfully! Also, I’ve become so much more familiar with all of the cast members of this film that I could enjoy it more (here’s looking at you Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy!). Obviously, if you’ve never seen this classic Nolan film, then you’re a fool and must watch it immediately!

Next up, I decided to re-watch The Gentlemen from earlier this year. I could tell as soon as I watched it that it would stay in my top three films of the year, and based on how 2020 is playing out at the moment, I think that will remain true. The gritty and foul-mouthed nature of this Guy Ritchie film is just something I truly enjoyed. Also, all of the characters are their own versions of gangsters, with just enough meta references in it to make me absolutely giddy throughout the entirety of it. This second time through I was also very impressed with how much dialogue Hugh Grant had to deliver! And Colin Ferrell’s, Coach, was a delightful comedic touch. As I said before, if the c-word isn’t your jam, then this film isn’t for you, but otherwise I highly recommend it!

The only new movie I watched (new for me), was a documentary recommended to me by a friend that is housed right on your friendly neighborhood Hulu, called Tickled. I know what you’re thinking. This is a documentary about tickling? Wrong! It’s a documentary about “competitive endurance tickling,” only that’s not really a real thing is it? That’s what filmmaker, David Ferrier, sets out to uncover. He’s a fan of quirky things, and I’d say this is pretty high on that list. What he ends up uncovering is truly mind-boggling and straight up bizarre. People are freaking crazy! If you’re up for something totally left field and unbelievably interesting, then you must add this to your list. And if you’re not convinced, I think the trailer just might change your mind.

So, like I said at the top, not much was watched this weekend in the way of films, but it was by no means a wasted effort! I got to re-visit some truly wonderful films, and I waded into the world of documentaries which I usually steer clear of. I’d say that was a great way to be welcomed into that world. Who knows, maybe this weekend I’ll reach a nice happy-medium of films, both new and old. Stay tuned!
