Why in the hell is this third season the final one for Somebody Somewhere? Once again, after finishing it’s final, seventh episode, I just felt happy. And then I felt sad knowing I won’t get to feel this from this show any more. I guess that just means I’ll have to re-watch it over and over again.
This final season still explores a lot of the same themes we got from the first two seasons, but they did an excellent job of making all of the relationships in the show end on a satisfying note. I don’t want to say that every single one of them was a happy one, but it was sure darn close to it! The simplicity of this show’s setting means that we get to watch our favorite characters enjoy something as silly as “catch club.” Adults need more silly and fun clubs in their lives like this! The only thing that sucks is that with Fred’s new strict diet, it means he can’t enjoy “French toast for the table,” with Sam and Joel afterwards. There’s definitely some resentment for Fred’s fiancé there, but they’ll still support Fred.
Similarly, Joel is adjusting to life with Brad. Brad, ever the oddball, lives a very clean and neat life, which can feel a bit smothering to Joel. After holding it in for some time, Joel does finally let Brad know that he wants to feel like the home is theirs and not just his. This means he gets to put pictures on the fridge. He also declares that he wants to go back to his own church and spend more time with his friends. Sam, while perhaps a little jealous last season, is fine to accept whatever Joel has to offer this season, along with really befriending Brad and his past.
Sam of course, has the most complex relationships with everyone on the show, including herself. What is new though this season is that she has a very slow burn love interest in the man, referred to as Iceland, who’s renting out their father’s farm. They are too awkward and just as cute in all of their interactions and frankly they are perfect together. But the relationship that gave me the most joy this season was with her sister, Trisha. I personally hated Trisha in the first season, but the two had grown to be incredibly close this season. They are also absolutely hysterical together and more open than even I am with my twin! I hope all siblings can make it to this kind of relationship someday.
All in all, this is just a beautiful slice of life show that offers up plenty of realism. Also, as I’ve said before, it has no business being as good as it is. Seriously! After episodes I’d catch myself smiling like a fool or squealing like a little girl and then immediately exclaiming, and usually out loud, that this show “has no business being this good!” I think that’s all the sales pitch you should need!
