Book Review: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance

At the insistence of one of my friends, and the promise of a film adaptation, I finally decided to give J.D. Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, a chance. It was quite a thought-provoking and somewhat somber read. While he grew up in Ohio like me, there was a lot that I couldn’t relate to personally, but there were many things he described that I’ve at least witnessed in my lifetime.

The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock

In anticipation of the Netflix release of the film of the same name sometime later this year, I decided to read the novel it’s based off of, The Devil All the Time. As far as first novels go, this one is pretty darn enticing. I breezed through this book not because it was an easy read, but because I couldn’t stop! It had me from the start, and with each graphic chapter I just found myself at the end way sooner than I imagined.
