So much happens in these hour-long episodes that I fear some day I’m going to miss something huge. I guess in order to combat that I over-explain a little bit, so sue me! Either way, this is a review of the fifth episode of The Boys, and spoilers may be below. You’ve been warned!
Let’s recap the lives of The Seven. Now that Homelander has outed Meave, the show that they’re on is trying to (painfully) incorporate it into the show. They even try getting Elena involved! Meave pleads with Elena to stay because it’s the only way she can protect her from Homelander’s inevitable wrath. Although, he may be preoccupied. After totally tanking in likeability points due to his nonchalance at killing an innocent by-stander, Homelander finally goes to Stormfront for help. Cue endless memes! I hope some of those make it onto the internet because they were pretty great. His repayment to Stormfront is some pretty destructive sex, and he finally understands that she’s pretty powerful herself. Speaking of Stormfront, it’s very obvious that Starlight is treating her differently since discovering she the murdering supe, Liberty, from back in the day. Stormfront, for now, thinks Starlight’s unease is because she knows that she’s the one who leaked the Compound V story. In less exciting the Seven news, A-Trainer is taking is firing really hard, and the Deep did in fact get married. Meave did go seek him out towards the end of the episode for his help, so hopefully we’ll see more if him soon.
Checking in with the Boys, we see Butcher giving up after Becca turned him away last week, but Hughie is able to track him down with the help of Mother’s Milk. Butcher ends up at his aunt Judy’s house, where Black Noir tracks him down. In hiding, we learn from Judy that Butcher had a younger brother named Lenny who Hughie reminds her a lot of. Makes sense why Butcher can’t ever fully let Hughie down. They manage to hold Black Noir off for a short bit before he starts destroying and burning down most of Judy’s house. In a last-ditch effort, Butcher threatens that if any of them are killed photos of Becca and Ryan and Homelander’s involvement will all be sent out to the media. Vought doesn’t call his bluff and tells Black Noir to back off. For now, Butcher is still fighting the good fight, but he doesn’t seem to have much left in the tank. Meanwhile, Frenchie is following Kimiko, who is taking hit missions from one of Frenchie’s old hook-ups. Kimiko is still very distraught by the death of her brother and tells Frenchie to back off. He relents, but yells at her that he cannot understand her because she will not teach him. I hope these two reconcile soon!
Overall, this was a strong episode, although there’s not much forward momentum into Stormfront. I’m waiting to see more involvement from the Deep in the coming episodes, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Homelander will be distracted enough to keep his sights off of Meave and Elena! I think everyone’s trying to expose Homelander, but I feel that by season’s end, he will be the last thing anyone cares about. I was intrigued by the short phone call Stormfront had with a inmate (played by Shawn Ashmore), so I can’t wait to see where that leads! My favorite bit of violence from the episode is courtesy of Kimiko ripping a man’s face off. Love it. Until next week!
