The Boys are back and I am so excited to get back into the lives of these degenerates! Luckily, I had a much shorter wait than most of the fans who watched the first season when it was initially released, but that doesn’t mean I was any less anxious for new content! And even though the first three episodes are all that’s at our disposal, it was plenty to keep our minds occupied until this coming Friday.
Graciously, there was a nice season one recap where we see that Homelander fathered a child with Butcher’s wife and he also lazered Madeline Stillwell’s head off her body. But, the boys are going to get the blame for that since Butcher then blew up her house. A-Train, although in a coma, is now onto Starlight helping out Hughie and the boys, and the Deep has been exiled to Sandusky for the time being. Whew! Keeping up? That was really just the tip of the iceberg of that season, so if you really want to, go ahead and watch it again!
We pick up essentially right where everything left off. The Boys are hiding out since they are all associated with Butcher, but he’s MIA during most of the first episode. A-Train is still in a coma, so Hughie and Starlight are still meeting up trying to get their hands on Compound V to bring Vought down. Homelander has appointed Ashley to fill Madeline’s position so he can control her like a puppet, but he’s in for the surprise of his life when a newly recruited supe to the Seven has been added without his say. Stormfront is that new supe, and she’s sassy as hell, although still quite ambiguous by the end of the first episode. The Deep has made some new friends and they try and recruit him to a “church” of some sort.
The second episode shows the female members of the Seven doing some severe eye-roll-worthy press, and Stormfront doesn’t really have a filter. It’s refreshing, ans Starlight seems to think so, too. She is able to get her hands on some Compound V, but a newly awake A-Train is threatening to expose her betrayal. Meanwhile, now that Butcher is back with the Boys, they go to find a supe terrorist to bring back to the CIA so they will help Butcher find his wife again. This leads to a fun party-store encounter with Kimiko’s brother! What?! We also get to see Homelander try to be a father to his son, but he doesn’t really seem to take to Homelander that well. Becca is rightfully cautious, because let’s face it…Homelander is still psychotic. Finally, we see the Deep get personal with his gills while he’s tripping on mushrooms, and that might have been my favorite scene since the dolphin incident in season one.
We pick up in the final premiere episode right where the previous one ended with The Boys trying to get to the drop off location for their supe terrorist, and they’re doing that via a boat named “The Big Wet Dream.” Meanwhile, the Compound V story broke and that’s all good news, for now. I’d have to assume it’s not going to do as much damage as they’d hoped. Homelander abandons parenting for the moment after he pushes his son off the roof. Good news for Homelander is that it was sort of the catalyst for activating his powers. After the Deep tries and fails to subdue the Boys by getting a whale impaled, the rest of the Seven hunt they Boys in the sewers where Hughie almost meets his end. All of this chaos ultimately leads to a chase for the supe terrorist who meets his end at the hands of Stormfront who might just be a ruthless as Homelander. We shall see.
Overall, a great start to the season, and they haven’t seemed to let p on the gas of the story line which I appreciate. I also look forward to seeing what else comes from Stormfront. Will she clash with them all or find her place as Homelander’s equal (that’s terrifying). I also hope to see some happier revelations for the Boys, but it seems like they’ll always be eating the shit sandwich. Can’t wait for more!
