What a fun series! I initially saw that this series was intended to be one and done, but not long after it premiered, The Tourist got renewed. While this show definitely had an ending, I think there’s certainly enough left open-ended to revisit these characters.
We meet a man acting a little shady at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere in the Australian outback, where not long after he leaves, gets mowed down by a semi-truck. I’m sure he was thought to be dead, but instead wakes up in the hospital with no memory of who he is or what he’s done. What he does gather pretty quickly though, is that someone is trying to kill him. From there, he enlists the help of some pretty random people and a super nice probationary constable to figure out why. And also hopefully who he is.
I don’t want to say too much, because everything we learn throughout this six episode series is so fun and a lot of it is quite surprising! I’m sure it’s not a stretch to assume that drugs are involved, but the web of humans also connected to this is quite intense. It was also really cool to learn how they all tie in. There were lots of mysteries to be solved throughout the whole series. Some were introduced early, but I felt like there were just as many at the end. I will say that the identity of the man is maybe even worse than you suspect (at least that was the case for me), which was so hard to reconcile with the decent man he was over the course of the show.
What really made this series was the cast, led by the pretty versatile Jamie Dornan. This guy has really come to surprise me over the last couple of years. He’s really a comedian at heart, I think, and this series was able to give him drama and action, but also levity. I also really liked Victoria, played by Shalom Brune-Franklin, who was able to really disguise her true intentions throughout most of the series. Perhaps my favorite character in the show was probationary constable Helen Chambers played by the always magnificent, Danielle Macdonald. She gave off very strong Fargo vibes initially, but I loved how caring she was, but also unyieldingly determined. Her chemistry with Dornan was so great!
Definitely give this series a go! And if for some seriously strange reason this isn’t your cup of tea, I promise it ends in a way where you don’t need to watch the second season whenever we get it.
