That’s right, the This Is Important Podcast took its talents out on the road to live audiences, and I was lucky (or impulsive) enough to by myself a VIP ticket for their stop in Cleveland.
In short, totally worth it. But of course I will elaborate more for you all. As I learned in talking with a stranger on the way over to the venue, the fans of this podcast, while ultimately vast if you think about the number of cities and sizes of venues they are booking, are really quite niche. In my case, I was a fan of Workaholics, thus I followed the guys on social media and that’s how I wound up listening to the podcast. This stranger on the other hand, had only ever watched a handful of episodes of the show, but was drawn to the pod thanks to his friends’ recommendations. In reality, I think it is a little more unheard of for a woman to be listening to this podcast, let alone attend the live event, by herself, but what can I say? I’m apparently and inappropriate weirdo.
Snagging a VIP ticket means that I picked a spot dead center and four rows back from the stage, so with my glasses on the view was prime. Given that I’ve listened to two of their previous live episodes, and all of their other episodes, I knew what to expect from the evening. Talk about cum, poop, sex, luggage, pickleball, and an assortment of other completely random things. They delivered, as expected. Almost immediately they got into sex talk when they were complaining about how unfortunate the fabric of the couches onstage were. That segued into a multitude of other seemingly random topics, but the smile on my face never left and the laughs kept coming.
Towards the end of the show they got into some hot news topics and then answered some fan-submitted questions. I personally enjoyed hearing them talk about when they thought they really made it. Kyle said it was when he saw a bunch of work trucks outside of their house, which is also where they filmed and having to explain to neighbors why they were there. Adam said it was almost immediately after the first season dropped. Blake said it was when he saw his hair as a wig offered for the Halloween costume of “slacker dude.” And Ders said it was when he saw their first billboard in LA. They ended the show as always with take-backs, apologies, and some epic giveaways. This included them tossing shirts and boxes of Hot Pockets into the crowd. And then the Wizards performed! Perhaps that was my favorite part of the evening.
After the show, all of the VIP ticketholders got ushered into a few different lines and then ultimately into the basement of the venue. There, we waited for just a little bit longer before the guys showed up to briefly meet and snap photos with all of us. I decided to be brave and bring my small drawing with me to gift to the guys. I handed it off and was met with really nice compliments and hugs all around. Ders, as sarcastic as he is, was really nice and probably gave the best hug (I am also probably biased). Adam was super sweet, as well! I know there’s no chance I left a lasting impact on these guys when there was probably another hundred people in line behind me, but they made me feel special in the moment.
A night to remember surely! And if you like Workaholics or just random inappropriate humor, then by all means add this tour to your fall to-do list!
