TV Recap: 9-1-1 Lone Star

Last night was the season one finale of 9-1-1 Lone Star, and man did they deliver some intense and unforgettable moments! Spoilers ahead!

First things first, they don’t make you wait but a few minutes for T.K. to come out of his coma (thank goodness for that!). All this near-death action really has him reconsidering everything about his life, especially his career as a firefighter. He’s not sure if it’s what he wanted for himself, or if it was just a way for him to reconnect with his dad since Owen chose his fire family over his real one after the events of 9/11. T.K. doesn’t get to dwell on that for too long, as a solar storm throws him back in the line of duty. And honestly, thank goodness for that, too! He was in the midst of ending things with Carlos when Austin went haywire. After everything that went down with the storm, T.K. decides to commit to a relationship with Carlos.

Elsewhere in the episode, Owen struggles to sit idle and maybe let T.K. throw away what he was meant to be doing with his life, but he sits back anyway, remaining hopeful. He took on a lot of responsibility within the two-hour finale, including just narrowly being electrocuted while rescuing someone from an airplane suspended on power lines! Judd has to tackle the topic of aging with his father, and when he almost bleeds out finally concedes to some of Judd’s demands (hello Life Alert!). Grace is fully on Judd’s side through that whole debacle, but in her own story line, on a 911 call, she encounters a man in space who is about to die from radiation poisoning. She’s able to connect him with his family in his final moments – that was unbelievably sad!

During the solar storm, Michelle ends up finding Iris, who’s been alive this entire time! She’s been living in a tent under an overpass that Michelle visits to administer medical services. Clearly overcome by her mental illness, Iris doesn’t want to go home with Michelle or their mother, so I’m sure if there is a second season we’ll be seeing more of that dynamic. The rest of the 126 is mainly there assisting in other bizarre 911 calls that are interspersed throughout the two-hour finale.

While things got crazy, they ended on a pretty subdued note for all our main characters. I think that is nice, since you never know what the future holds for a new series. However, I think it is highly likely that they’re getting a second season. And with that, there are some things I’d like to see. More emphasis on Marjan, Mateo, and Paul. A shift in Owen’s cancer journey, Iris’s life with mental illness and hopefully getting her help, along with the courtship of T.K. and Carlos. Lots of potential for this show, and while I’m still not crazy about the format, I still enjoyed my time watching it.
