You’d think I’d be more on top of watching new seasons of a show that I’ve been watching, but it seems like for most of them I get excited and then wait…and wait…and then suddenly a fourth season renewal gets announced before I’ve even touched an episode of Upload‘s third season.
I think, for this show in particular, I always think I’m not going to like what I get. Which, to my credit, this show isn’t really about something that I enjoy. The future and what that means from a digital and just quality of life standpoint really freaks me out to stop and think about for too long, and this show only talks about that. Like, do I want to live forever? Hell no. Even in the case of Nathan, where his life was cut short viciously, I don’t think I’d want to exist in a digital afterlife until the person who’s paying for it kicks it or joins me. I also steer clear of anything VR, so seeing people just spend days looking into that “world” gives me the willies.
In any case, this was another interesting season. Most of it was spent with a downloaded Nathan finally getting to spend time with Nora in the real world. Their bliss is cut with worry though, as they have no clue how long this downloaded body will last. They are also still in pursuit of exposing Horizon and Choak to the world. While this show is about technology and the future, it is also about equality, so I can at least appreciate it more from that perspective. Nathan and Nora just want everyone to have an equal opportunity at a digital afterlife no matter what their living lot in it was. They are really just good people.
While they are fighting battles in the real world, Aleesha learns that she’s going to have to fight for the uploads in their world. When she starts dating a Horizon executive, she learns how brutal and heartless they can be. She connects with Luke by the end who was mainly just sulking about losing Nathan to the real world. Which, fair. There aren’t too many young dudes in that place. Meanwhile, Ingrid gets a second chance with a newly uploaded Nathan who hasn’t turned his back on her yet. It appears that this Nathan has accepted his future wit Ingrid, but it should be noted she’s also not the same person she was at the start of this show. While she still has her sketchy qualities, she’s really transformed in leaps and bounds.
Honestly, I was glad to know that a fourth and final season was going to happen for this show before I started the third season because I would have been really mad with the cliffhanger it left us on! As a bit of a spoiler, both of the Nathan’s met, and no thanks to Aleesha’s girlfriend, both are captured. One of them must go, as it’s against the law to have two uploads, but we have no clue which one got spared! This is a unique and quirky comedy that really holds a mirror to our potential future. Worth your time.
